Two Classes, Two Great Teachers at $5 and $10!! Tuesdays, March 4 to April 15 7:30 to 9:00pm WEST AFRICAN (KUTIRO) with Marie Basse-Wiles TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY CONGOLESE with Funmilayo We want everyone to experience African dance with two of the best teachers in NYC and so we are offering a special promotion! For seven weeks, leading up to the 22nd annual dance conference of the Maimouna Keita School of African Dance, take class with Marie Basse-Wiles and Funmilayo for $5 and $10! • First Tuesdays in March & April (Mar 4, Apr 1): CLASSES ARE ONLY $5! • Other Tuesdays (March 11, 18, 25 and April 8, 15): CLASSES ARE $10 Marie Basse will focus on the rarely taught KUTIRO dances in March. Funmilayo will teach fundamental techniques of Congolese dances of harvest, rites of passage, healing and celebration. Live Drumming in both classes! Marie Basse-Wiles, one of the first Senegalese dancers to teach West African dance in New York City and artistic director of the Maimouna Keita School of African Dance, is known for her graceful moves and deep knowledge of djembe, kutiro and sabar traditions. In this class, Marie Basse will rotate teaching all three styles. Marie Basse-Wiles, who danced for many years with the Ballet National of Senegal and Koumpo Dance Company, under the direction of Ibrahima Camara. In 1983, Marie Basse-Wiles founded the Maimouna Keita School of African Dance, which hosts the largest and longest-running African dance conference in New York City. Funmilayo, born in Brazil and raised in Guyana, has traveled extensively to Nigeria and Ghana – where she lived and studied dance for three years – and also visited the Congo, the motherland of her ancestors. From 1987 to 1992, she was a member of the only traditional Congolese dance company in New York City, Malaki MA Congo. Funmilayo has been teaching Congolese dance for almost 20 years in New York City and is the director of F.U.S.H.A. Dance Company, founded in 1995. In 1996, she won the Ethnic Dance Award for best African dance instructor.
