Two SCDPS law enforcement officers were recognized at a ceremony today for heroic actions during the course of their jobs. Both men – Trooper Jonathan Deas and State Transport Police L/Cpl. Eric New -- were given the Director’s Hero Award. Tpr. Deas was on Patrol in Aiken County on October 11, 2014, and had stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver got out of his vehicle and told Tpr. Deas that his infant granddaughter appeared to be choking and was having difficulty breathing. The family was rushing the baby to the Augusta Medical Center. The trooper was able to remove a piece of plastic from the baby’s mouth, which had caused the baby to choke. In another incident last Fall, L/Cpl. Eric New was conducting a traffic stop on September 16 in Anderson County when a woman ran up to him, holding her throat. She was choking on a piece of candy. He performed the Heimlich maneuver, which worked to dislodge the candy. Congratulations to both for using your training to intervene and save a life!
