Two days ago, I shared an article from a 1911 magazine about a quilt exhibit and competition offered in a column The Comfort Club in Pictorial Review. The magazine gave judged, monetary prizes and labeled the event The Quilting-Bee. This occurred in 1911. Quilts were submitted from across the nation. Below is the ad in 1910 sponsored by the Reddisode Batting Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. The event called for quilts made by direct descendants of the Revolutionary War. The competition and ads for the batting appear in newspapers nationwide. (I wrote an article a few years ago for Blanket Statements. Also, the first place winning quilt is in Quilts and Quiltmakers Covering Connecticut made by Mary Beers.) The ad below was in the Seattle Daily Times. Are these the very first nationwide quilt competitions?
