Two games in one week with mixed fortunes. First game was at Bishop Auckland CC v Old Stocktonians who went into bat on an excellent NYSD wicket, although it had rained heavily there in the afternoon. In spite of some really tight bowling by the SG Petch team and some excellent fielding and catching, the Stocktonians managed to amass 133-7 in their 20 overs. SG Petch always struggled to keep up the scoring rate, and even though two great innings by Matty and Craig from Bishop Auckland, who both reached 25no, they fell short by 23 runs at the end of their 20 overs. Nevertheless, it was a good effort against a very strong Stocktonians side. Both teams entered the clubhouse afterwards for an excellent chilli-con-carne with boiled rice, washed down with a few pints of course ! In fact, there was so much chilli, 2nds and some 3rds were the order of the day ! Not surprisingly Andy Smith nipped outside and got his bait box, which he gleefully filled to have for his lunch the following day ! Thats what we like about Andy - never fails to disappoint us (by the way, not a bad bowler either) ! On Wednesday evening the match was at Crathorne CC against the HSBC who elected to bat first and reached 110-9, again restricted by SG Petchs tight bowling and excellent fielding. Andy Loynes and Capt Simon Rees opened the batting for SG Petch and once again got off to a solid, if somewhat difficult, start, as runs were hard to come by on this wicket. Andy once again got his customary 25no, and with other good contributions from Alistair Stoddart and Danny Kilkenny, not to mention Long John Silver (Alan Reed) who, without a parrot on his shoulder, safely saw us over the line, having pulled a hamstring, by reaching the target with a couple of overs to spare. As is customary again, both teams retired to the Crown at Kirklevington for refreshments Next Match Monday 14th July at Darlington CC, Feethams, v the Fairfield Foxes comm 6pm.
