Two hours after seeing its 14-game winning streak snapped, No. 12 St. Mary’s University softball bounced back in a manner one might expect of one of the nation’s best teams. The Rattlers dropped the front end of a doubleheader against No. 25 Angelo State 11-3, but roared back to win 9-2 in the nightcap at the ASU Softball Field. It was usual suspects Laura Benavidez and Haley Richter leading the way offensively, as Benavidez homered and doubled in the victory, while Richter launched a solo blast in the win to go along with a two-run shot and an RBI double in the loss. In all, Richter, the first baseman, went 4 for 7 with two home runs and six RBIs, while designated player Benavidez finished with four RBIs and two runs scored on two hits. Pitcher Vianna Gutierrez picked up the victory in the circle to improve to 5-1 on the season. Emily Brittian was tagged with the Game 1 loss, just her third of the season to drop to 12-3. St. Mary’s (19-4) actually took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of its defeat, only to yield eight runs to Angelo State in the bottom of the frame. The Rattlers cut the deficit to 8-3 in the third but could draw no closer. The tables turned in Game 2, where Angelo State (12-6) led 2-0 after three innings. But a Benavidez RBI double and a RBI single from Alex Rodriguez evened things back up at 2-2 in the fourth. Richter blasted a two-RBI single in the fifth to give St. Mary’s its first lead, an advantage Benavidez added to with a three-run home run. Richter added a solo shot in the seventh to make it 7-2.
