Two huge suitcases full of clothes and knick-knacks and ‘might-also-need-s’ stood at the airport for screening, while Rajan busied himself in buying Suzy a huge last-one-for-the-road-burger from the MacDonald’s with a sheepish smile pasted on his lips. Mrs and Mr Chakravarty stood behind the glass doors waving at their daughter-in-law who threw one or two pretty smiles in return. Her face was resplendent and she beamed with a detached joyfulness that only Rajan could trace. Rajan tried to feel bad too, but what he could manage was only a docile smile that displayed his almost perfect row of teeth and full thick lips. He went near Suzy to hand over the eats and a hug. Suddenly they felt like strangers while still trying to wrestle some warmth from the hug. From my story The Lesbian Wife from the book Tale of Missing Shoe and Other Stories
