Two night ago I did a show at a Mexican Restaurant, which, may have been the worst show I have ever done in NYC. Next to the stage sat a group of 10 clearly underaged kids wasted. The host tried to talk to them, make them part of the show, which was a mistake because they had no interest in being part of the show. Or leaving the show. The host didn’t know how to handle the situation, so he calls me on stage. I get on, and I cannot believe just how distracting the noise is. I felt like a substitute teacher in a Harlem high school, except there is no saving these kids. But, I have this motto; “try your best and always have fun.” I ask the audience, with a straight face, to give me applause breaks every time I finish a joke. I mean really ham it up. The gang of tweens finally realized that the show, no matter how indifferent or loud they were, will indeed go on. And, they get up to leave. As they file up and start walking out, the audience erupts into cheers. They had to be about halfway out of the venue when a guy sitting at the bar leans over and says something smart to a girl in the group. She clearly did not like what he had to say, and proceeded to take her glass and smash it on his head. Everything went nuts. Bouncers are grabbing the teens and shoving them out. And I’m giving a play by play of the madness from the stage. Then, one of the audience members, who was supporting me throughout my entire set, looks over and Shushes me - because they don’t want to miss out on the madness. Cops and paramedics arrive, as they do. And, right as the room settles down - I get the light to leave the stage. Anyways, this week I am on two amazing shows that aren’t going to suck, they’re part of Comedy Central’s New York Comedy Festival. Tonight I’m at Little Fields at 8pm and Saturday you can catch me at The Creek and the Cave at 8pm.
