Hello all, Happy feast day to all born, baptized and married today Happy feast day to all Deacons, Seminarians, Priests, Bishops, Monks, Nuns, Religious Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus. Happy feast day to all named John and Isaac, and parents of all those named John and Isaac Happy feast day to all Catholic Missionaries Happy feast day to all martyrs Today, October 19 marks the feast of Saint John de Brebeuf, Saint Isaac Jogues and the North American Martyrs The feast can also be referred to the feast of Saints John and Isaac and their companions Saints John and Isaac and their companions were French Jesuits who were the first Catholic missionaries to go to Canada and North America Their mission region extended from Nova Scotia to Maryland. Saints Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Noel Chabanel, Charles Garnier, Anthony Daniel, Rene Goupil and John de Lalande (the first six Jesuits, the last two laymen) preached the gospel to the Iroquois and Huron Indians, and after being tortured, they were martyred in the area of what is now Auriesville, New York. The martyrdoms took place between 1642 and 1649. Saint John de Brebeuf was born on the 25th of March 1593, Condé-sur-Vire, Normandy, in France He was the uncle of the poet Georges de Brébeuf. He studied near home at Caen. He became a Jesuit in 1617, joining the Order. He came to Canada at the age of 32 and labored there for 24 years. He was almost expelled from the Society because he contracted tuberculosis—an illness which prevented both studying and teaching for the traditional periods. In 1622 Saint John de Brebeuf was ordained a Catholic Priest. He went back to France when the English captured Quebec (1629) and expelled the Jesuits, but returned to his missions four years later. He composed catechisms and a dictionary in Huron, and saw 7,000 people converted before his death. He was captured by the Iroquois and died after four hours of extreme torture at Sainte Marie, near Georgian Bay, Canada. According to Catholic tradition, Saint John de Brebeuf did not make a single outcry while he was being tortured and he astounded the Iroquois, who later cut out his heart and ate it in hopes of gaining his courage. He was fifty-five years old when he was martyred He was martyred on the 16th of March 1649 (aged 55) in Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, near Midland, Ontario in Canada He was beatified and given the degree of heroic virtues on the 21st of June, 1925, Rome, Italy by Pope Pius XI ( who was the 259th Bishop of Rome since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) He was canonized on the 29th of June, 1930 by Pope Pius XI ( who was the 259th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) He was canonized in 1930 with seven other missionaries, known as the North American Martyrs or Canadian Martyrs The courage and love that Saint John de Brebeuf and Saint Isaac Jogues and the North American Martyrs possessed must have been so tremendous. They left their homeland of France to go into the territory of savages, and they desired to bring Christ to the Native American Indians. They experienced the extreme temperatures of Canadian winters, the lack of food, sufficient clothing, and much of the time warm shelter, yet their love was beyond understanding. In the Office of Readings we have an excerpt from the mission journal of Saint John de Brébeuf, He wrote: For two days now I have experienced a great desire to be a martyr and to endure all the torments the martyrs suffered.... I vow to you, Jesus my Savior, that as far as I have the strength I will never fail to accept the grace of martyrdom, if some day you in your infinite mercy should offer it to me, your most unworthy servant.... On receiving the blow of death, I shall accept it from your hands with the fullest delight and joy of spirit.... My God, it grieves me greatly that you are not known, that in this savage wilderness all have not been converted to you, that sin has not been driven from it. --------------------------------------------------- Let us Pray (Oremus): God our Father, you consecrated the first beginnings of the faith in North America by the preaching and martyrdom of Saints John and Isaac and their companions. By the help of their prayers may the Christian faith continue to grow throughout the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.Amen These martyrs are the patron saints of North America They are also the co-patrons of Canada. ------------------------------------------------- Let us pray that by the works, spiritual direction, spiritual maturity, martyrdom and intercession of Saint John de Brebeuf and companions, we may in this group find the spiritual motivation to win our souls for God.
