LAST WEEK I POSTED SOME PICTURES OF ADINKRA SYMBOLS THAT ARE AT THE EMANCIPATION PARK, JAMAICA AND PROMISED TO EXPAND THIS WEEK. Many of the slaves who were brought to Jamaica came from West Africa and so it was thought fit to pay tribute to our ancestors by incorporating West African Adinkra symbols in the design of Emancipation Park viz. the perimeter fence, the walls at the entrance, the benches and garbage receptacles. These symbols embody non-verbal communicative and aesthetic values, as well as the way of life of the people who designed them. The two headed crocodile seen at the entrance, on the benches and garbage receptacles shows two mouths that feed one stomach and symbolizes the oneness of the human family despite cultural differences. It is a reminder that infighting is harmful to all who engage in it. The symbol in metal at the top of the perimeter fence represents the Wafa Aba seed of the Wafa tree. It symbolizes hardness, toughness and perseverance. It is a symbol of one who is tough, hence it represents the strength and resilience of the Jamaican people. The Eban Fence is a symbol of love, safety and security. In West African culture it is believed that a home with a fence around it will make the family that resides in the dwelling feels more secure. The use of this symbol represents the fact that the emancipated slaves felt a sense of security knowing that they will no longer be separated from each other.
