Two nights ago I broke my elliptical. I was doing 25 minutes a day, and feeling great. So, this morning, I got up at 7am, put on my shorts and a t-shirt, and headed out for a run. This is the first time Ive ran (on purpose) for over 3 years. Keeping with this weeks theme of posting something positive post each day, my post today is about Health. Now, Im not the healthiest guy around, but I have a lot to be thankful for anyway. I dont have a life threatening illness, I dont get sick often, and my health over the past year and a half has been steadily improving with small lifestyle changes - cutting out wheat, generally eating (and cooking) better, regular exercise, etc. As an on and off smoker most of my life, Ive also not done that for a very long time. When I weighed 375 pounds, Vlasta, one of my wisest friends, had just the words I needed to hear to recognize it was time for a change. I will always be thankful for that nudge. I went on a health craze, and was in great shape (at the peak running 3 days a week). What wasnt healthy was my frame of mind, and this inevitably sent me back down a track of unhealthiness. Over the last few years, as Ive started to tackle the issues of balance in my life, and seriously incorporated this as part of my approach to overall wellness. I want to thank some of the other people whove inspired me along the way, although there are too many to name. For teaching me how to eat better, which is so important and so under-rated by our culture, thanks goes especially to Gerry and Jenny. For inspiring me to exercise regularly (by your example), thanks goes to Wendy, Jeremy, Cooper, and Todd. An important part of health is healthy relationships and mental health, too. Ive thought about this a lot, and thankful to my friends Randy and Kim for their insights. Whats something you do to achieve and maintain a health life?
