Two of the greatest fighters never to win a world title - TopicsExpress

Two of the greatest fighters never to win a world title squared-off #OnThisDay in 1942 as Charley Burley scored a terrific stoppage over arch-rival Holman Williams in New Orleans. Williams would gain revenge some two months later when he outpointed Burley over fifteen rounds. Incidentally, in the five months from May to October that year, Burley would lose over ten rounds to the great Ezzard Charles, then beat Williams on points, lost to Charles again, before then stopping and losing to Holman as mentioned above. Thats some level of competition. Burley and Williams were part of the unofficial Black Murderers Row. This was a term coined by Budd Schulberg in the 40s to describe a handful of menacing middleweights who were too good for their own good to the extent that they were avoided and were forced to box one another. Other members included: Eddie Booker, Jack Chase, Lloyd Marshall, The Cocoa Kid, Bert Lytell and Aaron Tiger Wade. #boxing #boxingnews #boxinghistory #charleyburley #holmanwilliams
