Two perfect storms almost 50 years apart. How will history rate the last one? Watching a JFK documentary and my mind wonders back to when I was a 9/10 year old chap in Wexford, the only news came on the wireless and that was sparse. We had received the obligatory atomic fallout hand book and the bejasus was frightened out of us all. I remember hearing on the wireless about the USSR nuclear missiles and the Cuban bases,,,also the US nuclear missiles and their Turk bases. The documentary highlighted the resolve and determination of J F K to save the world from certain extinction with the help of his most aggressive enemy USSRs Crushchev....we survived. Black Friday/Saturday 26/27 Oct 1962. Then another black Friday/Saturday 26/27 September 2008 came to my mind, this time the financial crisis, Ireland and Europe were at a point where Europe and probably the world faced certain economic meltdown. This was Ireland with its leaders facing the equivalent to the 1962 Black Saturday Cuban Missile Crisis. It was different in the fact we were working with our friendly partners and could in all honesty decide the right path for this crisis with full confidence that our friends, allies and partners had our back. Another piece of history was made. In America at that time there was a George Wallace (later governor) a hard line democrat that had the answer for everything and the solutions for nothing except to promote and spread propaganda and hatred. In Ireland there were and still are today many would be Wallaces, Ya know what I mean. I suppose the moral of these stories are that your enemies will not betray you but your friends will betray you and history will also be the judge of our 2008 crisis.
