Two things about the NYPDs alleged slowdown have struck a deep and unsettling chord within me. 1) The slowdown is costing the city of New York $10M a week in revenue. (nypost/2015/01/09/nypd-slowdown-costing-the-city-10m-a-week-in-revenue/) Do you know what this says to me? That the governments budget DEPENDS ON PEOPLE BREAKING THE LAW. Forget the slowdown for a moment--what if the cops could not write tickets because people obeyed the law? What would the city do THEN? To me, this speaks of an unspeakably heinous philosophy. 2) Police Commissioner Bratton has ordered cops to to write more tickets or they will lose vacation days. (nypost/2015/01/09/nypd-slowdown-costing-the-city-10m-a-week-in-revenue/) I have the same issue here. Firefighters are not ordered to put out a certain number of fires per month; they treat fires as an exception rather than the rule, even though their jobs also depend on those exceptions. Given that human nature is what it is, Im not arguing that police are necessary. However, neither the citys budget nor their performance evaluation should be based on the the assurance that people will do evil. That seems morally reprehensible.
