Two trips to Memphis and back since last Friday to pick up and deliver The Chicks BF. Ah, young love. Ten random thoughts on a long drive that is through mostly unpopulated territory (other than Casey Jones Village in Jackson)! 1. From Nashville to Memphis, you travel through 14 counties--two of them twice: Davidson, Cheatham, Williamson, Dickson, Hickman, Humphreys, Benton, Decatur, Carroll, Henderson, Carroll, Henderson, Madison, Haywood, Fayette, and Shelby. Yes, I made notes. 2. That fab 70s group Americas GREATEST HITS CD is great--even on the fourth or fifth listening (can you say forget to grab some CDs?). I could listen to Daisy Jane a hundred times. 3. Related to #2, there are NO really decent radio stations from about Dickson (when the Nashville stations begin to fade out) until you hit Memphis. :( 4. There are several beautiful rivers--Harpeth, Tennessee, Duck, Buffalo, Deer Fork, Hatchie, and Loosahatchie--along the way. 5. LOTS of Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas plates coming and going--and of course it is CMA Music Fest Week here in Nashville, so it was fun to see how many out of towners were heading INTO Nashville, though I pity them when they reach the congested mess that is downtown Nashville this week. 6. I never see more troopers and police on an interstate than I always do on this stretch of I-40. 7. Oddly, I saw no airplanes flying overhead. Wonder if theyre all at 30,000 feet by the time they hit that West Tennessee corridor. 8. I heard NO horns honking--literally not ONE--on either of my trips last Friday or today--except ONE: In the driveway of the Wolfchase Galleria Starbucks in Memphis. When he drove by me, I noted that he was not a Tennessean. Just sayin. But he did get his coffee. 9. People think of East Tennessee and the mountains as so beautiful, and West Tennessee as flat farmland, but there is a gentle loveliness in the low, rolling green hills of West Tennessee. 10. Watching The Chick and BF making googly eyes at each other was strangely unsettling--how did my mother feel when I was making googly eyes at my first BF? Why do I feel like I want to send her back to elementary school and keep her there? How can my daughter be growing up? Why was I less bothered by Sons googly eyes at his GF last summer? Lots to ponder. On a really random side note, last night I dreamed I was SKYPING with Eddie Vedder. It was totally rockin.
