Two weeks ago, I had a very disappointing performance and DNFd at just 18 miles in at the Coyote Backbone 68 Mile Traverse. So, the most logical thing to do was, obviously, to stick to marathons, right? Wrong!! As a knee jerk reaction to reaction, I signed up for Beyond Limits Ultra 100 Miles. On paper, it looked like an easier course but in reality and combined with biting cold and windy weather, it was a tough race and I wanted to quit after 50, 56, 62 and even 64. Fortunately, Sophie Sofie Romero and Shawna W. spotted me in the process of DNFing at 62 and would have none of it. Id go on to do the majority of the remaining miles with them on a very very cold and windy night. The aid station food was awesome and also helped me get through the night...pizza, burgers, egg burritos and plenty more. After starting out way too fast with an opening 8:58 50 Miles I was reduced to a shell of my normal self for the remainder of the race but roughed it out and crossed the finish line in 25:22, 3.5 hours off my PR but much sweeter for the adversity I had to overcome. Great race, great fellow runners, beautiful venue, great volunteers and great race directors.
