Two years ago, Lebanese-French trumpet virtuoso Ibrahim Maalouf and I were awarded a composition grant to create a project inspired by the often unheralded female voice/perspective during the Arab Spring Movement that swept across North Africa and the Middle East. We simply call the project WOMAN/FEMME and we are honored to premiere it at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, May 23rd, 2014 as part of the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival.
