How to Get to Know Folks (or Infiltrate Groups) Best way to get to know people is to get out among them. No matter what the group, if I want them to consider me part of them, I simply listen, nod at their points, smile when appropriate - and take my cues from them. This works with practically ALL people. Especially when you encourage them by asking THEIR point of view and nod, knowingly, when they give it, as if they just said the wisest thing you ever heard. (This may take some practice in facial and body control!) If they ask you a question you cannot answer (because you are not part of their group or philosophy), then you just say... Well, I dont rightly know - what would YOU do (or what do YOU think)? This works because most people dont give a damned what you know or think and are just waiting to present their point of view, even when they come right out and ask you. So give them the opportunity. Before long people will be seeking YOU out and calling you smart and wise - when you really havent said or done a thing but let them talk. This is also a wonderful way to identify the real bullshitters (if you really DO know the subject matter) as well as a fantastic way to weed out the agents provocateur. If they are using this tactic that I just described, then they may simply be acclimating to your group before trying to stir things up.
