Tyke was a 20 year old female elephant when she was shot down with 86 bullets on August 20th 1994 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Before escaping from a circus, she killed her trainer, caused severe injuries to her groomer and then ran out on a rampage for more than 30 minutes on the streets of Kakaako. She left a number of spectators horrified with her behaviour. Finally the police ran down the street and shot her with 86 bullets. She eventually collapsed on the ground and died. That was not the first instance when Tyke ran out of control. She recorded 3 previous incidents of escaping from circuses of Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Canada respectively. This was a clear indication that Tyke was not mentally fit to perform in circuses. Yet the money-minded officials of different circuses continued using her. One question that needs to be asked – Tyke could have also been tranquilized and not murdered the way police intervened and shot the gentle giant. Tourniquet 86 a music group created an album ‘Antiseptic Bloodbath’ to pay tribute to Tyke the martyred elephant.
