Typical socialist government, bite the hands that feed it. Taken from the Riviera Times: Tourist tax - Holiday rental websites in France will soon be forced to collect a tax from users under new legislation set to be passed this week. Under the new regulations a ‘tax de sejour’or lodging tax will have to be collected by the website operator. Current laws state that anyone renting out accommodation for short-term-stays must impose the tax de sejour on guests but there have been complaints from the hotel industry that more informal websites operated by holiday rental firms aren’t doing so. Currently the tax ranges from 20 euro cents to 1 euro 50 cents per day depending on the quality of the accommodation. This is set to rise to 4 euros per day for the most luxurious hotels while people renting out private apartments or rooms via holiday rental sites will have to impose a lodging tax of 75 euro cents per day on guests. France is the most visited country in the world with 83 million tourists a year. Tourism accounts for 7 percent of GDP with annual spending by foreign visitors amounting to 36 billion euros.
