U.S. Ambassador Philip S. Goldberg to Visit Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte On July 15, 2014 (Tuesday), U.S. Ambassador Philip S. Goldberg will visit Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte to participate in events supported by the U.S. Embassy and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). At 11:00 a.m., the U.S. envoy will attend the closing ceremonies of Pacific Partnership in Patio Victoria, Tacloban City. Pacific Partnership is the largest annual multilateral humanitarian assistance and disaster relief preparedness mission conducted in the Asia-Pacific region. At 1:00 p.m., he will proceed to Palo I Central School in Barangay Cavite West, Palo, Leyte for the launch of “Preventing Trafficking in Persons (TIP) through Sustainable Livelihood Recovery for Typhoon-Affected People,” a U.S.-funded initiative that seeks to reduce the vulnerability of residents in Ormoc, Leyte through livelihood support and building TIP awareness and response capacity of community leaders. While at the Palo I Central School, Ambassador Goldberg will also lead the ground breaking ceremonies for two school buildings that will be constructed and furnished by the U.S. Government through USAID Rebuild. The Php30.8 million project, which is designed to withstand strong typhoons, flooding and earthquakes, will benefit about 1,920 students. USAID/Philippines Mission Director Gloria D. Steele, Department of Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro, Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla and Mayor Remedios L. Petilla are expected to participate in the ground breaking ceremonies. It also provides technical assistance to the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery.
