U.S. Immigration Reform Bill Offers Hope for Immigrants The immigration reform bill endorsed by President Barack Obama took a momentous step forward on June 27, 2013 with a Senate vote of 68-32 in favor of final passage, which means the bill is one step closer to bringing the biggest changes to U.S. immigration law since 1986, offering hope and prosperity for immigrants, businesses and families who have been waiting for decades. The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act bill (S. 744), would overhaul the U.S. visa system to give American companies better access to foreign skilled workers, give new hope to the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, and would also invest more in border security. While the bill continues to be debated in Congress, there are many options available now for working and living in the United States! What this means, is that you do not have to wait for the bill to pass but may qualify for one or more visa options that are currently available. Some of the available visa options include: L1 Intracompany Transferee Visa - The L1 visa is available to those that will be working in the United States for a company that has a qualifying relationship with a foreign company (parent company, branch, subsidiary, or affiliate). The L1 visa is also available for companies that do not yet have a U.S. presence who are seeking to expand their operations. E1/E2 Investor Visa - Investors who are nationals of a treaty country can be admitted to the United States to engage in trade or to invest a substantial amount of capital in a U.S. business. E3 Visa - Australian citizens can obtain U.S. work authorization under E-3 visa status. The E-3 visa is only available to Australian citizens and although it is subject to a Cap much like the H-1B visa, the Cap has never been met. TN NAFTA - One of the best alternatives to an H-1B visa is the TN visa under NAFTA. TN visas are available to citizens of both Canada and Mexico that will be performing duties under qualifying NAFTA professions. O-1 Visa - The O-1 visa category is available for foreign workers that can demonstrate that they possess extraordinary ability in their profession and have received recognition for such achievements. The O-1 visa is a great option for those that have risen to the top of their profession. The O-1 visa is not limited to certain professions.
