U.S. Senate Passes Sweeping Immigration Reform Bill 68-32, All Eyes now on the U.S. House of Representatives For those of you who want to know about the Senate Bill, which was passed on Thursday, June 27, 2013, with a vote of 60/32 (including all 54 Democrats and Republicans), I strongly advise that you read the below article and/or watch the attached video clip (at least). Unlike the Senate (aka the “Upper House”), the greatest deliberative body in the world, the House (given its relatively large size with 435 members), has espoused a piecemeal approach on crafting a sweeping immigration reform bill. As a matter of fact, the House of Representatives GOP leaders, hitherto, assert that the Senate Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) Bill will not get a hearing in their chamber, as the House drafts its own bill. Undoubtedly, reconciliation is needed for a CIR bill to be passed by both the Democratic-led Senate (Upper House) and the Republican-led House of Representatives (Lower House). Having closely followed proceedings in the Senate on the CIR (and having read/heard about the evolving House bill), and given the 14 Republicans picked up yesterday in the Senate (including Senator McCain of Arizona and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida), coupled with their influence in both the Senate and the Houses, I am cautiously optimistic that a sweeping immigration reform bill will be reconciled and signed into law by the President of the United States (possibly by November). Happy Friday to you all! God bless you all. Have a wonderful weekend!
