U2 have insisted that they will release a new album this year ending the wait for fans in what has been the longest gap between new releases. Rolling Stone reports today (August 19) that a spokesperson for the band told the magazine: Weve always said an album is expected this year. Reports had suggested that the I Threw a Brick Through a Window hit makers were delaying a new album until next year so they would have more time to work with Adele and Florence and The Machine producer Paul Epworth. The Irish Times recently quoted a source who said there would be a new U2 single in September, followed by an album in September or October, a tour announcement in December with dates beginning in April of next year. French newspaper Nice-Matin also reported that the group shot a new video in Nice two weeks ago. Universal Music Venezuela and Universal Music Colombia also briefly posted tweets saying the new album was due in September. However, when contacted by RTÉ Ten, Universal Music Ireland said they are not making any comment on this at the moment. Following the lead set by David Bowie and Beyoncé of effective low-key releases and album campaigns, U2 are also thought to be taking a softly-softly approach to the new release. With titles ranging from the self-effacing 10 Reasons to Exist to Songs of Ascent, a companion piece to 2009s commercially under-performing No Line on the Horizon, U2 have been working on their 13th studio album on and off for almost five years. The band have recorded with producers Danger Mouse, Will.i.am, David Guetta, RedOne, Epworth and Ryan Tedder. Earlier this year, The Edge told long-time champions of the band, Rolling Stone: We really want the songs to be right. Thats the only reason why were not on tour - because were so good at starting, not so good at finishing. Thats always the way its been. [U2] are mad for it at the moment and really want to make a new record, Bono also said in an interview with The Sun last year. [We] dont care if it takes 10 years, Bono added. [We] dont care if it never happens again - [we] just want to get it right.
