UCC Santa Paws 2014 was our biggest holiday celebration ever. Our guest list included more than seventy-five families, many with small children. Santa Claus took time off from his busy schedule to attend our event at Massey Hill Recreation Center, and the children loved it. Our lunch buffet included fried chicken, baked chicken, chicken wings, baked ham, pizza, corn on the cob, green beans, mashed potatoes, fruit salad, macaroni salad, dinner rolls, cakes, pies, plus cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets for the children. There were door prizes for everyone, and several twenty-five cent raffles: Washer, dog house, comforters, a fully decorated Christmas Tree, two baked turkeys, 2 Dream-lites, all kinds of great gifts. The Guess How Much game was won by Crystal Bedsole, and she walked away with a treasure chest containing $94.90. Everyone looks forward to The Christmas Store and we did not disappoint. The tables were piled high with toiletries, toys, books, and gifts of every kind. There were coats and sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves - The Food Pantry offered vegetables, mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, fresh fruit, bacon, hot dogs, sandwich meats; bread and pastries of every kind. Final stop was The Pet Store. We had the good stuff! Cesar, treats, beds and blankets for the small dogs, treats, food, collars, toys, food bowls for the bigger dogs, and all kinds of toys, food and treats for the cats. It is not easy to host “UCC Santa Paws” and we could not do it without the help of local friends and businesses. Special thanks to Walmart, Grandson’s, Patterson’s, Gavin’s IGAS, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Superior Bakery, KFC, Florence Rogers Charitable Trust, Hoke/Raeford Humane Society, and the dedicated volunteers who donated food, gifts, money, and endless hours of hard work. UCC-The Big Fix has seen its share of trouble this year and we have seen human nature at its best. When our office and pet food barn were vandalized, and all pet food stolen, people came from far and wide with donations of pet food and money. A “Wounded Warrior” showed up and repaired our broken doors. We have several new volunteers and one or two possible new board members. Our next big event is “100 Valentines” in February. We always participate in World Spay Day and I hope we can exceed the 112 spay & neuter surgeries we did last February. Adoptable animals are still being euthanized daily at our shelter and that is the tragedy of irresponsible breeding and pet ownership. Our mission is to stop the tragedy. Our policy is Goodwill – No exceptions. YOU can be a HERO for our animals. Volunteer and donate.
