UDOM EMMANUEL AND THE BENEFITS OF HIS LEADERSHIP By Emmanuel Nicholas Often, I hear some folk measure political leadership using parameters of one being a career politician. I see this as being a funny misplacement of priority and uncoordinated assessment of facts, which cannot help any figure out the actual true position of history in regards to the subject matter. Firstly, there is no one on earth that is a career politician, or it is safe for me to say, no one should be a career politician as politics is not a profession, so it can never be career. One of the major factors which throw Nigeria into the ruins of economic quagmire is the appointment and election of men whose only livelihood is politics, who see themselves as professional politicians. They will take over the position of leadership, award contracts to their co- professional politicians who are not professionals in such fields of endeavour, that is if they did not by proxy award it to themselves. This has been responsible for projects abandonment and most times the allocation of the country or State are shared among these set of politicians, then leaving the masses languishing in penury. Plato, the father of politics rightly puts it “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” I see in the current dispensation, men who are afraid of the light, intellectuals and core professionals in the mould of Udom Emmanuel. The new rumour is that Mr Udom Emmanuel as a core financial manager will not give room for any financial malpractices. Chief Dr Godswill Akpabio many wars are caused by this same endemic, because he refuses to use his office to disallow politicians whose only bid is for the common wealth to be share within a circle of few individuals and Governor Akpabio also refuses to give some level of contracts to non-professionals. He goes after companies and core professionals, hence ending the trend of abandonment of projects in Akwa Ibom State. The masses should rise up and kick against the tandem of those unpatriotic fellows, who are looters and not men who seek our collective good but for the good of their pockets, to enable them marry more wives and own mansions all over the world, while the downtrodden are sent to their early graves every second of the day because of hunger and starvation. ‘’The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is to be ruled by someone inferior to yourself or at the detriment yourself,” and one of the penalties of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors or plunderers.” Mr Emmanuel Udom is a tested and trusted leader who over the years has earned himself confidence from Nigerians and the world at large. Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws. He will be a responsible leader who will use his knowledge in financial management. For a good financial manager who rose to an exaulted position as a director is exposed to the management of sectors of the economy and how they are made functional and well managed. No right thinking person should be afraid of knowledge, therefore those who see Udom Emmanuel as a threat are themselves hazards to the continuous uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State. There is corruption, which is true. It cannot be fixed or eliminated. That is probably true, so what else is true, is eliminating the reasons for being corrupt. If you have a system that has no reasons for corruption, no gain from corruption and no chance of being corrupted, then you have a just system and that is very, very achievable with Udom Emmanuel’s prudent management strides. There will be no place for corruption to hide, to seed and grow and to gain power, In a just system, corruption cannot exist, that is what a just system is. In this just system, we need a just man like Mr Udom Emmanuel. People continually want “fair, just, honest, ethical” leaders because the system is a corrupt and unjust system, by default, and cannot be fixed, meaning it cannot be made just so we need a just man not a career politician without no sense of values for the growth of the society but for self-enrichment and the empowerment of his corrupt lineage, thereby imposing hunger and untimely death among the low income earners and end users. With Mr Udom Emmanuel, imagine societies in which those growing up, are growing up familiar with, used to, and accustomed to sharing, helping, supporting and so on, and with honesty as an easy thing to do rather than a choice to be made depending upon the fear one has to deal with concerning their survival and the survival of others. We need to eliminate what is not relevant to a new, just and better system. That definitely means money, politicians, laws, and ownership of the earth’s resources which allows the mismanagement of them, and the needs of money and those who manipulate it. The ability for the populace to discern between what a leader is telling us and what is in his heart remains the rub. So don’t go for mouthy political leaders who come to you with bags of money, because after the election, you will be crying to the grave. Prefer evolution to revolution, because Udom will “evolutionised’’ and infuse more strategies that will steer the economy of Akwa Ibom to a greater height than a career political-looter. He knows the best techniques and means to empowered the youth and women and as an economist creating of jobs and attracting investment to the state will be a day to day event, because with his wider knowledge, business acumen and contacts around the world, he has gathered greater degree of influence and trust in the financial world. In matters of urgent State development projects which needd urgent funding when there is a short fall in the allocation to the State or inadequate availability of funds, he will source for funds at his fingertips being a onetime director of a financing firm and credit manager. Human behaviour flows from three main sources: desire, emotion, and knowledge, Mr Udom Emmanuel after a deep interaction with him has the desire to turn Akwa Ibom to become the financial nerve of Africa, with deep emotions and a passion to see his father land being an industrial haven. He is endowed with the knowledge on how well to manage them without rancour and manipulation. Plato says “In politics we presume that everyone who knows how to get votes knows how to administer a city or a state. When we are ill… we do not ask for the handsomest physician, or the most eloquent one.” We ask for well groom professionals so that we will have the best treatment. We should therefore apply this to governance not seeking after men of low values, and money bags, we should seek for professionals, who can figuratively turn water into wine, turning our tales of woes into testimonies of redemption as what Governor Akpabio has done. Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard, so the people of Akwa Ibom should not allow themselves to be bought over by yam porridge and therefore morgage their future to the wild world of looting leadership. It’s about time we embraced change in leadership where professionals are given the chance to govern, so that our collective economy can be dependable not the economy of few political elites. Friedrich Engels says we find two great gangs of political speculators, who alternately take possession of the state power and exploit it by the most corrupt ends – the nation is powerless against these two great cartels of politicians who are ostensibly its servants, but in reality dominate and plunder it.” This is the same crop of people we see today in Akwa Ibom fighting tooth and nail to sustain their retainer-ship to power, so that they can loot our treasury dry and have wide spread of conglomerates around the world. The power behind every successful leadership is the amount of knowledge stored in the capacity of the leader; this is the fountain through which prudent projection flows from. A leader without knowledge is a fruitless tree, it occupies the land and wastes it without yielding profit to the planter. During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, he saw a beautiful olive tree and went to harvest the fruit for his meal and met nothing, out of annoyance and frustration, he cursed the tree and it withered away. So the professionals politicians are like such trees who will come with bogus fictitious election manifesto to deceive the populace and lack the technicality on how to implement them, hence continue to lead the state to a state of opprobrium and throw the people’s future for better life to abyss. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel is the man that will potently make Akwa Ibom State a land of gigantic strides. As financial manager, economists and politician he will be able to fit into the big shoes that Governor Akpabio will be leaving behind. So instead of running the state to a status of mockery he will double the successes of the Akpabio’s administration.
