UHURU KENYATTA HAS UTTERLY FAILED TO SECURE KENYA For the umpteenth time, Al Shabab terrorists recently struck again and killed 28 innocent Kenyans in Mandera. Despite Uhuru Kenyattas lies of securing Kenya, Al Shabab seems able to strike us with impunity. Just as the victims of the first massacre were being buried, Al Shabab added insult to injury and called the bluff of security forces by killing another 36 innocent Kenyans in the same area in Mandera. Similar repeated attacks had previously been perpetrated in Lamu, Wajir, Garissa, Mombasa and Nairobi. Uhuru Kenyatta ignored the pleas of kenyans to improve security and his recent sacking of the incompetent Ole Lenku and Kimaiyo should have been done one year ago when Westgate was attacked in Nairobi. The insecurity in Kenya is turning the dreams of Kenyans into grim nightmares. Will our children have a safe and secure country or will we, blinded by our tribalism and petty squabbles, bequeath our children a broken and failed nation? As I work and travel across Africa, the most valuable resource I see are not the minerals of Sierra Leone, the oil of Nigeria, the rich agricultural land of Uganda, the enterprises of Kenya or the manufacturing plants of South Africa. The most valuable asset we possess are the human resources, particularly the young people. What we need for them to be a force for good is quality education, security for them to grow up well and an enabling environment for them to thrive in their desires to create, innovate, build and own their own ideas and businesses. If Kenya and Africa does this for its young people, Al Shabab, Boko Haram and Islamic State will have nobody to recruit for their odious crimes. Africa boasts the youngest population on earth and will soon provide the largest and cheapest labour force in the world. These youth are raring to go and succeed and will not take kindly to anybody who unfairly blocks their path to success. The youth are beginning to have a say in discourse through social media, unlike in the past where they had no voice in mainstream media. They say what they think and feel freely and eloquently. Businesses, discerning politicians would do well to follow this discourse closely or they will find out the world led by young people left them behind in their slumber. Recently in Burkina Faso, a long-time dictator, Blaise Compaoré, looked invincible one day and woke up the next day to find young people had toppled him and put paid to his misguided machinations to extend his 27-year misrule. Other dictators plotting to hang onto power across the continent would better take heed. Youth entrepreneurs are emerging in certain sectors of business and industry with their innovative creations, branding, marketing and payment systems. Increasingly, capital, which is a major constraint for start-ups in traditional industries, is not barrier to entry to modern businesses with digital platforms. What really counts for success in markets now are bright ideas. We must invest in creating more opportunities for our young people so they are not tempted by depraved Al Shabab terrorists and can earn an honest living and build the nation.
