UK charities have pooled their efforts through the Disasters - TopicsExpress

UK charities have pooled their efforts through the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to launch an appeal for humanitarian aid to Gaza. Around 11,000 homes have been destroyed or are uninhabitable. Half a million people are sheltering with other families or in UN schools and hospitals. 1.5m people have little or no access to water and electricity supplies are non existent for around 20 hours each day. Over 1,800 people died in the recent attacks and over 9,500 who have survived are injured. Nearly 2,900 of these are children. 5 hospitals have been closed and at least 24 clinics have been damaged by shelling or air strikes. Medical facilities are hugely over stretched. The DEC launched a similar appeal after Israels assault on Gaza five years ago. At that time the BBC and Sky refused to join other broadcasters in screening the appeal. Thousands of people around the UK protested at what seemed like an inexplicable decision by the BBC and Sky and a motion I tabled in Parliament urging the appeal to be screened was signed by well over 100 MPs of all parties. This year, Im pleased to report that both the BBC and Sky will join ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 in broadcasting the DEC appeal tomorrow (Friday). bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-28686516 Please help the DEC appeal if you can. You can donate by text, online, by post or over the counter at banks and post offices. Details here dec.org.uk/?gclid=CMaq8MzegcACFctt2wodYn4A7g
