ULTIMATE SONY BOOMBOX (Document 417) #4 The obvious choice for your portable audio needs is the Sony CFD-G505BLACK boombox. This boombox deserves more than 5 stars. Conquering thy portable audio kingdom, the Sony boombox is ready to XPLOD. Rap, Rock, Reggae and R & B, this Sony boombox is ready to play any music genre on demand. It is undeniable that in terms of pure audio quality this Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo is without equal in the entire boombox world. The world class stereo speakers are of exceptional audiophile quality capable of producing deep room filling bass along with crystal clear vocals. The large, beautiful and red three speaker arrangement is based on a discrete power amplifier system. The Sony Portable Stereo utilizes two dedicated amplifiers to power the Full-Range drivers and the super bass producing Power Drive Woofer (P.D.W.). The Power Drive Woofer is the flagship feature of this exceptional mobile stereo. The P.D.W. rests in an acoustically tuned cabinet designed to achieve maximum low frequency bass response for personal entertainment or the next entertainment event. The speaker system consists of two 4-inch (10 cm or 100 mm) diameter cone type drivers (3.2 ohms impedance rating) and a formidable 4-ohm impedance rated 4-inch (10 cm or 100 mm) diameter Power Drive Woofer for powerful sound effects for music, movies and games. The Power Drive Woofer is prominently located and displayed in the center position of this unit between the left and right channel Full-Range speakers. A wide X-shaped silver/red colored Sony XPLOD logo serves as a protective cover for the bass speaker’s recessed cone type driver. The Power Drive Woofer’s outer cover houses the stereo’s digital LCD. The Power Drive Woofer features three distinct levels of bass adjustment. The Power Drive Woofer lights up in red when it is engaged for the first time. There are two levels of brightness for Power Drive Woofer illumination. Upon Power Drive Woofer activation, the LED illumination ring surrounding the center bass speaker lights up in bright red. When the Power Drive Woofer control is pressed on the boombox or the remote commander for the second consecutive time, the P.D.W. illumination ring lights up in a much brighter, bolder and fiery shade of red color that provides excellent special effects lighting to the room that the stereo is located in. The P.D.W. illumination ring is extinguished when the center bass speaker is disengaged. The Power Drive Woofer offers Position Off, Position 1 and Position 2 bass reinforcement settings. The Power Drive Woofer lighting effects do not function when the sleep timer is activated. The Power Drive Woofer has no effect when stereo headphones are connected to this boombox. This sonic powerhouse of a boombox produces 20 Watts of power (RMS) at no more than 10% T.H.D. The power amplifiers allocate 12 Watts of power to the center bass speaker and 8 Watts total power output to the mid-range drivers. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo is housed within a massive boombox cabinet. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo’s construction is impeccable, made of superior ABS plastic materials, is a work of expert craftsmanship and sets the industry standard with regard to how a boombox should be made by a consumer electronics manufacturer. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox comes with a green 3.5mm (1/8”) Stereo Headphone Jack for connection to stereo headphones with a manufacturer recommended 16-68 ohms driver impedance rating for private listening, adjustable 0-120 minute sleep timer and 4 Preset Sound Modes (Rock, Pop, Jazz and Vocal) with a Flat EQ setting to enhance the reproduction of classical music to suit musical tastes or acoustic properties of the room that this portable stereo is placed in. This Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox comes with a full-function 27-Key remote commander. The model number of the remote commander is RMT-CG500A. The remote control has numerous buttons to enhance the functionality of this portable stereo. The remote features a green circled Power button so that the stereo powers on in AC power mode only and turns off in battery and AC power modes. There is a Sleep button to access the 0-120 minute sleep timer which powers the radio off automatically at six selectable intervals of time. To activate the sleep timer, the user must first play any music source that the stereo offers (Radio, Cassette or CD). Next, press the Sleep button on the remote commander or the boombox. Each press of the Sleep button cycles the sleep timer via the LCD to the following: “60min-90min-120min-OFF-10min-20min-30min.” After the selected sleep preset time period has elapsed, the stereo powers off. The sleep timer can be cancelled by pressing the Power button on the boombox or remote commander. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can’t be programmed like an alarm clock to power on and begin playback of music source at a specified time. A Function button allows switching back and forth between the FM/AM Tuner, CD Player, Tape Player and Line Input. There is a 10-digit numeric keypad (0/10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) for controlling direct tuner preset station input and direct CD track access playback. Preset stations and CD tracks greater than position 10 in memory can be accessed directly by pressing the >10 button on the remote and then entering the exact preset station or track number respectively. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo’s remote commander does control the radio’s manual and preset tuning features. The remote has Tune - and Tune + buttons for manual station tuning. Press and hold either one of these Tune buttons and the tuner automatically finds the next available station in descending or ascending station frequency order on the FM or AM bands. The tuner automatically scans for the next available strong signal broadcast and stops when it receives one. Press the Tune -/+ buttons on the remote one key press at a time to locate a specific FM or AM frequency. For the FM Band, the tuner proceeds up or down the frequency spectrum .1 MHz channel steps with each press of either Tune button. On the AM Band, channel step tuning proceeds up or down the frequency spectrum at 10 kHz spacing increments. The remote directly selects the 20 FM Band Stereo Presets and the 10 AM Band Mono Presets. FM/AM preset stations can’t be navigated in ascending or descending order one station at a time from the remote. The Preset Tuning buttons on the boombox must be used to achieve that function. The remote commander can preset stations manually into memory by tuning in the desired FM/AM frequency and pressing a Number key of choice on the keypad for approximately 2 seconds. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox offers exceptional tuning in manual and preset station tuning modes for radio listening interests. The remote raises or lowers the volume to the desired listening level. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s Volume Controls are located on the remote commander and on the front panel. The volume can be decreased or increased in 3 segment increments on a 0-10 digital volume scale. The line segment volume scale is depicted on this stereo’s LCD. Pressing or holding a Volume button decreases or increases the volume rapidly as needed. Press either Volume control one key press at a time and the volume will be adjusted up or down one incremental segment at a time. There are Band and Mode buttons for switching back and forth between FM and AM as well as changing stereo mode to monaural reception if an FM radio station is received with excessive static. The remote activates or shuts off the Power Drive Woofer by pressing the Woofer button. There is a Sound button to cycle through 4 Preset Sound Modes. The remote commander contains all CD playback transport functions including: Play, Stop, Pause and two Forward and Reverse Skip/Search buttons. The remote commander can’t control the tape deck transport functions. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo operates on 8 D batteries and 2 AAA batteries for the accessory remote commander. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is compatible with the following D 1.5V or equivalent battery types: carbon-zinc, alkaline and NiMH rechargeable batteries (1.2V 10,000 mAh capacity recommended). The remote commander is compatible with the following AAA 1.5V or equivalent battery types: carbon-zinc, alkaline, lithium and NiMH rechargeable batteries (1.2V 850-1000 mAh capacity recommended). I recommend Duracell Coppertop DURALOCK Power Preserve Technology, Rayovac Ready Power or Energizer Max Power Seal Technology D alkaline batteries for the main unit. The Energizer, Rayovac or Duracell D alkaline batteries provide maximum audio performance and battery life for this magnificent Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo. With respect to the remote commander, I recommend Duracell Coppertop DURALOCK Power Preserve Technology, Duracell Ultra DURALOCK Power Preserve Technology, Rayovac Ready Power, Energizer Max Power Seal Technology AAA alkaline batteries, Energizer Advanced Lithium or Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA batteries for maximum infrared transmissions. Stay away from cheap no name label alkaline, carbon-zinc or rechargeable batteries. Unknown brand D and AAA batteries are inferior, last a very short time span and leak in the battery compartment. Make sure to never mix old and new batteries, different battery types, different battery voltages and different battery brands. Remove all D batteries from the main unit and AAA batteries from the remote commander if the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo is not going to be used for an extended period of time (30 days or more) to avoid damage from battery acid leakage. Energizer Advanced or Ultimate Lithium AAA batteries feature leak-resistant construction and may be more suitable for storage in extreme temperatures inside the remote commander compared to AAA alkaline batteries. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s D batteries should be replaced when the Red LED OPR/BATT light dims consistently, the stereo outputs subpar sound quality or there is no sound at all. The remote control’s AAA batteries should be replaced when it can no longer reliably operate the portable stereo from a short distance away. When purchasing D and AAA batteries for the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox, it is a good idea to check the date on the package. A fresh set of alkaline batteries should have a best if used by date of at least 6 or 7 years ahead of the date of purchase. Duracell Coppertop DURALOCK Power Preserve Technology D and AAA alkaline batteries are guaranteed by the manufacturer to stay fresh in the packaging for up to 10 years from the date of purchase. The package date for Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA batteries for the remote commander may be up to 20 years ahead of the date of purchase. There is no definitive answer as to the actual time that the D batteries last. The battery life specifications provided by Sony (up to 18 hours) in the user manual are approximate, are offered under factory operating conditions and are accurate if Sony D (main unit) or AAA (remote commander) alkaline or zinc-chloride batteries that are manufactured in Japan are used. Battery life varies by battery manufacturer and battery chemistry. Your Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox will have different battery life results because it is not likely to be used exclusively at the Sony factory. The longer the duration the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is powered on and as the volume level increases during a playback session battery life will be shortened accordingly. Proceed with caution. Battery life is determined by many factors and that is why individual outcomes vary. Such factors include the type of music being played, the volume level being used, ambient room or outdoor temperature and the amount of time cassette recording takes place off the D batteries. Battery longevity will be decreased if this boombox is powered by D alkaline batteries in extremely cold temperatures. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox performs poorly if name brand D batteries are not used. Have a spare set of D and AAA batteries nearby in case audio performance deteriorates in the middle of a favorite song. AC power is available as an alternate power source for this portable stereo. A detachable polarized plug AC power cord is supplied with the boombox. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox should be unplugged from the wall outlet if it will not be used for an extended period of time. The D batteries are automatically disengaged as a direct current power source when this boombox is plugged into a wall outlet. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can’t be powered by a car battery, RV, campgrounds or boat directly. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not offer the requisite 12V DC Input Power Jack for this purpose. Yet, the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can be powered from a car battery with a DC-to-AC power inverter. A power inverter converts DC battery power into standard household 120V, 60 Hz AC current to supply power to portable audio electronics within a vehicle. A high quality power inverter incorporates surge protection, allows for safe engine startup, overload protection, low battery shutdown and is compatible with a vehicle that has a 12 Volt battery. Sony does not provide technical specifications with respect to compatible power inverters for this Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo. Only the detachable AC power cord can be plugged into the rear panel AC line input receptacle. The boombox is heavy and therefore, not easily portable. The LCD is small and should be backlit. I do wish it had more amplifier power and an HD radio tuner built-in. Of course, this Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox has a sturdy recessed fold down carry handle for reliable transport. Connect an iPod mini, iPod classic, iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iPod touch, SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip MP3 Player, Motorola MOTOACTV GPS, Philips-Android MP3 Player, Zune MP3 Player, Sony Walkman MP3 Player to the 3.5mm (1/8”) AUX Line Input Jack located on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. The audio cable needed to make this connection between an iPod and the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo is not included with the boombox. A stereo patch cable with 3.5mm (1/8”) male mini plug connectors on both ends or Sony audio cord RK-G136 is needed to make this connection. Connect one end of the 3.5mm cable to the 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack located on the iPhone or MP3 Player and insert the other end of the 3.5mm cable to the 3.5mm (1/8”) Aux Line Input Jack on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo to complete this connection. Music from the connected iPod or MP3 Player can be recorded to cassette. There is no support for MP3 CD playback on CD recordable media. This boombox plays store purchased audio CDs, CD-DA compliant audio discs and CD-R/RW discs. The CD Player supports music files burned in the Windows Media Audio (WMA) file compression format. Playback of Dual Discs, DVD-Audio discs, data compact discs, CD-R/RW discs that have been finalized incorrectly, music discs containing various digital copyright protection schemes and irregularly shaped audio discs are not supported. It is possible with a personal computer that MP3 file audio discs created from a third party software application, such as the Microsoft Windows Media Player, will play in the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not list the MP3 compressed file playback specification in the operating instructions or marketing specifications. MP3 CD Playback is outside of the scope of normal product operation and feature guidelines as defined by the manufacturer. Some customers report great success with MP3 CD Playback while others express their sincere disgust, dissatisfaction, displeasure and disappointment in this item’s MP3 CD Playback capability. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox only supports playback of audio discs that are burned in audio mode. There is no manufacturer support for compact discs burned in data mode. It is possible to record or copy homemade CD-R/CD-RW discs with MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) compressed files burned on them to Type I normal bias cassette with the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s cassette deck recorder. The CD Player can play copies of audio discs created in stereo compact disc recorders. The CD-I compact disc standard was released to the buying public in 1991. The CD-I format includes interactive audio/video compact discs featuring embedded graphics, data or multimedia applications. CD-I format consumer stereo playback equipment allowed consumers to enjoy multimedia content from CD-I discs, CD+G, video CD, Enhanced CD and Karaoke discs. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can’t copy video, video games, game shows, educational software or graphics to cassette from CD-I format discs. Nonetheless, the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can copy audio tracks from audio CD-DA compact discs to cassette. The cassette player is not compatible with the Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) tape or Digital Audio Tape (DAT) formats. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s CD Player can’t play CD-I data tracks as they will be automatically skipped. Discs labeled with the CD+G logo or CD-DA music discs with embedded video clips or music videos play in the CD Player but the video clips will be skipped for playback purposes. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is compatible with any brand of compact disc recordable media but I recommend Sony CD-R/RW media for best playback results. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not provide a 3.5mm (1/8”) Microphone Input Jack, condenser microphone, public address system, AM Band stereo reception, TV Band audio, shortwave reception, tape counter, timer recording, alarm clock, power-on timer, auto power-off function, support for pro DJ lighting equipment, MP3 CD Playback, auto-reverse tape playback, dedicated 3.5mm/RCA Line Output Jack or karaoke features. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereos overall sound quality will be diminished greatly if the center bass speaker is turned off. This portable stereo’s tuner reception, cassette and CD playback operations rise to the highest levels of performance within the boombox community. Prerecorded cassettes or cassettes with recordings that have been made from the FM/AM Tuner, CD Player or 3.5mm Line Input source component can be listened to. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does offer a full auto stop in Rewind or Fast Forward tape transport modes. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does perform the full auto stop in tape play mode. The cassette player’s sound output is outstanding and on par with its component stereo cassette deck counterpart. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox remembers the last radio station tuned, input source selection and volume when powered off. Preset stations can’t be erased from memory but they can be overwritten with new ones. The CD Player does not feature electronic anti-shock protection for active use playback. The United States Federal Trade Commission rates this Sony CFD-G505 Portable Stereo’s power amplifiers at 12 Watts Total Output Power. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is UL Listed and features a bottom panel U.L. Logo. This Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is reasonably priced for the loud audio and features that you get. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo has a sturdy construction to it and should last for many years with proper care. If CD skipping or inconsistent playback troubles are experienced with the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505BLACK boombox there are troubleshooting steps that can be taken to resolve the issue in short order. The problem may be with your compact discs. The problem solving steps that can be taken before seeking warranty service or purchasing a replacement for a malfunctioning Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox include: 1. Check the battery compartment for battery acid leakage. If battery residue on the battery terminals is noticed, clean the terminals with a pair of gloves on and then reinsert fresh name brand D batteries. Always observe correct polarity in the battery compartment. 2. Energizer, Duracell or Rayovac 1.5V D alkaline batteries must be used for maximum reliable operation of this unit. 3. Check the disc that you are trying to play. Is the disc scratched, damaged, warped or dirty? If it is, the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox will be unable to play the disc. Try a different CD and see if conditions improve. 4. Check for physical damage. Has the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox been dropped, exposed to water, dirt, sand, dust, rain and/or direct sunlight? The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox will malfunction if one or more of these conditions is present and may not be correctable. If the unit has been exposed to water let it dry for a few hours before attempting to use it again. 5. Make sure that the CD laser lens is clean. 6. Refrain from touching the laser lens. Otherwise, the unit may malfunction. 7. Are you attempting to play a CD-R/RW disc with MP3 files on it? If this is the case, change the playback disc to one that conforms to the compact disc digital audio format. 8. Keep the disc compartment lid closed when the boombox is not in use. 9. Keep the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox exterior casing clean to avoid unnecessary failure. It is impossible to get better performance from store purchased audio compact discs with another boombox besides this Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo. This Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo outputs audiophile-grade sound in my home from my personal compact disc collection. I feel like my favorite band is performing live right in front of me when the stereo is playing. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can’t record on CD. The Sony boombox does not feature a CD burner. Mass market boomboxes have never been able to record on CD. When the boombox era began circa late 1970s and early 1980s, cassette playback and recording was a dominant form of portable music entertainment for a large number of American households. Nothing much has changed in recording technology built into the portable stereo since mass production of boomboxes began. From a product longevity perspective, there is no information contained in the operating instructions that supports habitual long-term outdoor use of the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox for mobile audio applications. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not feature a shock-resistant, weatherproof, water-resistant or waterproof construction. This portable stereo is suitable to go outside to entertain customers for a family picnic, backyard barbecue, on the patio, apartment balcony, at the outdoor gym, for dance instruction at dance class, the local park or to use on a tool cart while making repairs on the car during a late summer afternoon. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can be taken to the beach or boardwalk in the summertime but this item should not be exposed to the direct rays of the sun for an extended period of time. Exposure to sun rays at the beach or in a parked car with the windows closed on a clear summer day should be avoided to prevent heat related damage to critical internal boombox components. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is very heavy at approximately 20 pounds with 8 D alkaline batteries installed in the battery compartment. Some customers may feel uncomfortable or awkward transporting the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox outdoors for different events that require portable audio entertainment. This boombox should not be subjected to water splashing, water infiltration inside cabinet openings, dust or sand infiltration, a drop to the ground and mechanical shock. The boombox should not be placed on an unstable surface. Ventilation openings in the casing should not be obstructed to prevent overheating. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox may suffer cosmetic scratches, dents or blemishes and the casing may become soiled when it is exposed to the outdoor elements on a consistent basis. The above mentioned incidents that may occur while the portable stereo is located outdoors could cause damage, operation error or complete malfunction to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. Such product abuse may not be covered by the manufacturer’s factory warranty. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox should be kept indoors during inclement weather. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s maximum lifespan will only occur when it is used exclusively at home or in a secure indoor location. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox should not be exposed to extremely hot or cold temperatures for an extended period of time to prevent disruption of compact disc playback. Nonetheless, there are benefits to using the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox exclusively indoors that include: substantially increased longevity, class leading sound quality with prodigious low bass output for the boombox category and consumers expect to conserve D battery power by plugging this stereo into an available wall outlet, power strip or surge protector. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack is compatible with the following private listening accessories: monaural earphone, dual monaural earphone, flexible ear hook stereo-to-mono headphone, dynamic driver stereo headphones, electrostatic transducer stereo headphones, HD neodymium magnet stereo headphones, active noise-cancelling stereo headphones, passive noise-cancelling stereo headphones, digital noise-cancelling stereo headphones, Sony RF/IR wireless stereo headphones, digital surround sound stereo headphones, 3.5mm stereo headphone jack splitter for simultaneous multiple user headphone listening, DJ style stereo headphones, extra bass stereo headphones, studio monitor stereo headphones, clip-on stereo headphones, ear buds, behind-the-neck stereo headphones, behind-the-head stereo headphones, lightweight stereo headphones, water-resistant stereo headphones, open-air stereo headphones, portable stereo headphone amplifier, 3.5mm monaural headphone extension cable and a 3.5mm stereo headphone extension cable. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox produces prodigious sound from its digital stereo headphone amplifier. Your choice of stereo headphones greatly affects the sound and dynamic overall loudness from the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not feature a dedicated 3.5mm Analog, RCA Stereo, Digital Fiber Optic or Coaxial Line Output Jack for connection to a stereo power amplifier, A/V receiver, integrated amplifier, MP3 Recorder, cassette recorder, CD Recorder, DAT Recorder, DCC Recorder or MD Recorder with a 3.5mm Analog, RCA Stereo, Digital Fiber Optic or Coaxial Line Input Jack. An external power amplifier can’t be added to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505BLACK boombox does not feature a balance control to play split-track audio CDs and cassettes. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s dimension measurements are: Width: 20-7/8 inches, Height: 9-½ inches, Depth: 14-5/8 inches (530 x 241 x 369 mm w/h/d) and Weight: 17 lbs. 10 oz. (8.0 kg) with alkaline batteries installed. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox includes a 90-day labor and 1 year parts limited manufacturer warranty. There are differences between the XPLOD boombox and component shelf stereo system product categories that Sony produces. The differences between these two products categories are: Sony does not manufacture a shelf system that can accept batteries as a direct current power source. A Sony compact stereo shelf system can only be powered by 120V, 60Hz AC current. A Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is the correct category for a complete, self-contained audio system that can be powered by heavy-duty D batteries or AC power with an auto AC/DC power source switching function. A Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is a self-contained portable stereo that features an Digital FM/AM Tuner, FM/AM Memory Station Presets, single-disc CD Player, single cassette deck recorder, synchronized CD/Cassette recording, two full-range stereo speakers, center bass speaker, digital stereo power amplifier, recessed carry handle for mobile transportation, retractable metal telescopic FM whip antenna and ferrite bar AM Band antenna in a ABS constructed plastic cabinet. A Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox provides customers with a detachable polarized plug AC power cord for home audio use and it’s relatively lightweight compared to a Sony compact stereo shelf system for portable audio field uses. A Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox weighs approximately 20 pounds with D batteries installed. A Sony compact shelf system ranges in weight from 10 pounds for lower priced systems to over 100 pounds for multi-speaker shelf systems. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox features a 3.5mm AUX Input Jack to accommodate the world’s most popular MP3 Players including an iPod, iPhone, Zune MP3 Player and BlackBerry. The distinguishing hallmark of a Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is that it can be taken almost anywhere indoors or outdoors for listening pleasure. The better performing boomboxes such as the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 model are powered by long-life D batteries. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox requires a large number of D batteries to accommodate its more powerful Mid-range and Power Drive Woofer amplifiers. A Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox features a IR remote commander, IR remote sensor, 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack for private listening, adjustable sleep timer, discrete power amplifier system, preset sound field modes and a Power Drive Woofer to deliver deep bass from music. Conversely, the Sony compact stereo shelf system does not qualify as a boombox because it can’t be powered by alkaline batteries and is far too large and heavy to be considered portable. The Sony component shelf system is designed to be used in the home exclusively and the main stereo unit can only be powered by 120V, 60Hz AC current. A Sony shelf system features more audio/video inputs to connect optional components. For example, customers routinely add their TV, DVD Player, Blu-ray Disc Player, VCR, turntable, cassette deck and/or game console to their Sony shelf stereo system. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox has one 3.5mm audio input for connection to an MP3 Player. Sony Shelf systems feature antenna inputs for connection to an external amplified antenna for improved FM Band reception. A Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not feature antenna inputs and is limited to the FM telescopic and ferrite bar AM Band antennas for local FM/AM reception. Numerous Sony shelf systems offer multiple-disc CD changers for uninterrupted music listening at the dinner party. Select Sony shelf systems incorporate a timer to enable time-shift cassette recording of programs off the FM/AM tuner. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is limited to single-disc CD playback and a single deck cassette player. A Sony shelf system normally sports multiple speakers with a powerful subwoofer. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox category is limited to a two-speaker arrangement. An elite Sony compact stereo shelf system features a built-in DVD Player, a large 7-8 inch LCD viewing display and can output surround sound to accommodate an action film’s energetic soundtrack. The Sony shelf stereo system offers much more amplifier power than the vast majority of boomboxes on the market today. The boombox category can offer anywhere between 1 Watt to 52 Watts of total amplifier power. Sony shelf systems range between 10 Watts to 2000 Watts of RMS measured amplifier output power. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can’t be connected to an external power amp because it does provide a Pre Out Expansion Amplifier Jack often found on stereo receivers. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s portability would be adversely impacted if a stereo power amplifier could be attached to it. It is not necessary to connect a power amp to this magnificent Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s Digital FM Band Tuner receives the following station frequencies in the New York City Metropolitan Area: 88.3, 88.9, 89.9, 91.5, 92.3, 95.5, 97.1, 100.3, 101.1, 101.9, 102.7, 103.5, 104.3, 105.1, 105.9, 106.7, 107.5 MHz. The Digital AM Band Tuner receives the following station frequencies in the New York City Metropolitan Area: 570, 620, 660, 710, 770, 820, 880, 930, 970, 1010, 1050, 1130, 1190, 1280, 1330, 1380, 1430, 1480, 1560, 1600, 1660 KHz. Receivable FM/AM stations vary by geographic destination and/or radio market. The type of radio reception (Local or DX) received on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is dependent on a multitude of environmental factors, seasonal conditions, astronomical occurrences, principles of radio propagation, the laws of physics, F.C.C. regulations regarding broadcasting power transmissions, broadcast antenna electromagnetic polarization patterns and circumstances that are beyond your control. Reception changes based on the time of day it is, atmospheric conditions, the presence of sun spots, solar flares, solar storms during the daytime hours, the movement of radio waves from one part of the earth to another, nearby power lines, electrical motors near the home, the proximity of appliances that emit harmful RF interference to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox, the material that your home or room is made of, the distance from the broadcast tower(s) to the home, the presence of mountains, hills or skyscrapers in the neighborhood, signal strength of the station being received and the quality of the boombox antenna and radio receiver. Radio reception varies by geographical location. It can’t be determined in the abstract if the tuner design of a boombox is responsible for the quality of radio reception that a customer experiences. A digitally tuned portable stereo is not inherently superior in radio reception compared to its analog counterpart. A boombox tuner’s sensitivity and selectivity with respect to weak signal and adjacent channel reception aptitude thrives or dives based on the electrical design, thermal design and craftsmanship of the portable stereo’s tuning circuitry, oscillator, signal processing, noise filters, micro controller, accurate calibration of the digital tuner and built-in FM/AM antennas. In most instances, a digitally tuned boombox radio merely provides convenience to the listeners as they are able to store preset stations into memory. Customers instantly recall their favorite radio stations and programs at the touch of a button on a digital tuner. Nevertheless, a digitally tuned radio usually suffers less from annoying station-drift than an analog tuned boombox with a large tuning knob. Accurate, clear and drift-free radio reception for a boombox will inevitably vary. It is not possible to give a definitive answer as to the exact distance that a radio program can be received at a specific point of the day or night. Only a general range of reception can be estimated in miles when determining if a particular broadcast is capable of being received by the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. FM radio signals are broadcast at a higher altitude than AM signals. As a result, FM Band radio interference can be caused from multipath reflections of radio waves off tall buildings or nearby mountains in the neighborhood. The reception area of most FM signals ranges between 40-100 miles. Under rare atmospheric conditions, referred to as Tropospheric Ducting, FM signal sky wave coverage over land or bodies of water during the warm summer months extends outward up to a 190-500 mile radius from a station(s) antenna transmitter during the daytime hours. Tropospheric Ducting forecasts are rated on a weakest signal to strongest signal geographical coverage area 0-10 index scale. Hilly or mountainous terrain work to defeat expanded Tropospheric Ducting FM radio wave propagation across the U.S. for the vast majority of FM Band listeners. FM coverage is much shorter than AM because FM signals travel in straight lines (line-of-sight) and have reduced interaction with the earth’s ionosphere. FM monaural reception offers better sound quality compared to AM. FM mono signals are susceptible to less interference than AM broadcasts. FM stereo broadcasts provide high-fidelity sound to the target radio audience and provide the shortest reception range in a particular market on the 87.5-108 MHz frequency spectrum. AM Band radio stations on the 530-1710 kHz frequency band periodically reduce power at night as required by F.C.C. regulations or perform maintenance operations on the transmitter that could adversely affect reception capabilities on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. The transmissions of AM broadcasts are much longer than FM. In the daytime, AM broadcasts traveling via ground wave transmission may reach listeners within a several hundred mile radius. At night, AM signals roaming via sky wave may travel hundreds or even thousands of miles away from the intended radio market. DX reception of remote AM Band radio stations is possible after sunset because of an AM broadcaster’s ability to bounce signals off the outer reaches of the earth’s atmosphere to Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boomboxes outside of the intended radio market. AM Band DX reception is best during the winter months and is at its lowest point of performance in the summer. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox incorporates an internal ferrite bar antenna to bolster AM Band reception of strong signal or Clear Channel 50,000 Watt stations. FM Band reception can be enhanced on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox by extending the telescopic whip antenna to achieve full quieting, when necessary. An examination of the various sources of radio interference is an important subject as it pertains to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s overall day-to-day operations. Most sources of radio interference come from entertainment devices within the home that emit RF or radio frequency waves. Radio frequency interference may be caused by phenomenon occurring outside the home, in the immediate surrounding area of the home, deteriorating atmospheric conditions and/or interference from adjacent frequencies on the FM Band. Listeners experience interference from nearby electronic equipment in their home from such items as computers, cordless telephones, microwave ovens, cellular telephones, televisions, stereos, compact disc players, electric power tools and everyday household appliances. RF interference can be caused from lighting equipment, metal objects and nearby broadcasting equipment. A competing station adjacent to the station being listened to occasionally bleeds into the tuned station to degrade reception opportunities also. Moving a Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox closer to a window and away from electronic devices that emit RF interference dramatically improves FM/AM reception. Medium Wave coverage can be expanded upon indoors with an external omnidirectional passive antenna. For example, the Terk AM Advantage Indoor Antenna makes use of a wireless electromagnetic procedure known as inductive coupling to improve AM Band reception by placing the antenna in close proximity to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. An external FM antenna, such as the C. Crane FM Reflect Dipole Antenna, can be attached via alligator clips to the whip antenna on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox for improved FM Band reception indoors. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not provide amplification for musical instruments. Use Type I normal bias (ferric-oxide) cassettes for all recording applications. Ruggedly built Sony HF Series 60 or 90-minute cassettes should be used for best cassette recordings. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s cassette recorder is compatible with all brands of Type I normal bias cassettes for playback or recording from a tape library. Stay away from cheap no name brand cassettes or tapes longer than 120-minutes except for long playback or continuous recording operations. AC power should be used for best recording results and to conserve D alkaline battery power. The cassette deck’s combination playback/record head, erase head, pinch roller and capstan be cleaned with a wet or dry type head cleaning cassette after approximately every 10 hours of use to maintain superb playback and recording sessions. Purchase a tape head demagnetizer to preserve optimum cassette operations after approximately every 30 hours of cassette playback. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not provide continuous or auto-reverse playback of Type I normal bias cassettes on the single cassette deck player/recorder. The cassette must be ejected and then turned over by hand to play the next side. I can’t recommend connecting a SiriusXM Portable Satellite Radio Tuner to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. The operating instructions and marketing specifications do not specify that the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable Stereo is SiriusXM satellite radio ready or SiriusXM satellite radio compatible. Sony does not list this Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox as satellite radio ready or satellite radio compatible on its SonyStyle customer support website. Reception of satellite radio signals from a satellite radio service provider such as SiriusXM on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox is outside the scope of normal product operation as defined by the manufacturer. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox does not feature satellite radio tuner command and control facilities such as a SiriusXM control module input jack, satellite radio antenna or satellite radio tuner. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox can’t control, measure the signal strength, adjust the signal strength or troubleshoot satellite radio signals that are input into this portable stereo. However, a SiriusXM Portable Satellite Radio Tuner’s RCA or 3.5mm Line Output Jack can be connected to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s 3.5mm AUX Line Input Jack. Some Sony customers report that a satellite radio tuner plays perfectly through the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s powered stereo speakers. Nonetheless, other Sony customers with a SiriusXM Satellite Radio Tuner in their possession report their utter disappointment, dissatisfaction and disgust with the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox’s satellite radio reception. Purchase a SiriusXM satellite radio ready boombox and compatible satellite radio tuner for SiriusXM satellite radio reception. The Sirius Dock & Play Boombox SUB-X1 is recommended for portable satellite radio reception. Programmable track memory on a Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox allows storage of up to 20 songs on a Red Book CD-DA audio disc into the portable stereo’s memory in any playback order. For example, the following tracks may be set into memory: 2, 9, 20, 11, 8, 6, 4, 1, 7, 9, 13, 17, 15, 3, 10, 5, 19, 18, 12 and 16. Obviously, if an audio disc features less than 20 tracks, then the maximum number of tracks contained on that specific disc can be programmed into memory. Conversely, if the audio disc features 25 tracks or any number over 20, then only a maximum number of 20 tracks can be programmed into the portable CD player’s memory. The tracks wanted in memory must be prioritized in this scenario. A CD program play “Full” indicator appears in the LCD if more than 20 tracks are programmed into memory. The program play mode selection can be repeated by pressing the MODE button on the main unit until the REP and PGM symbols appears in the LCD. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox allows tracks that were programmed into memory to be recorded on cassette, if needed. CD program play mode is cancelled once the disc compartment door is opened, the Mode button on the main unit is pressed until the “PGM” indicator is removed from the LCD, power to the main unit is turned off, the CD PLAY button is pressed twice consecutively during disc playback, the batteries are completely consumed or AC power is removed from the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox. The program track memory play mode works with CD-R/RW discs, store purchased audio discs, 12 cm audio discs, 8 cm audio discs, audiobooks on CD and compressed file MP3 audio discs as long as the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 boombox supports those kinds of media playback. Programmed CD tracks can be cancelled in its entirety before playback commences on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G505 Portable CD Player. The consecutive playback order of all programmed tracks can be viewed by pressing the Display/Enter/Memory button on the boombox. The CD program play mode can be engaged with the buttons on the main unit or the remote control.
