UMAR BN ALKHATTAB 33: Abu Sufyan in A Big Trouble. The population of the Muslims was increasing on a daily basis, but that of the Makkans was shrinking. This gave them a serious concern, so they quickly jumped at the idea of signing a peace treaty with the Muslims of Madinah that the Makkans would never attack the Muslims again and that the Muslims would return any new convert to Islam to Makkah. But the treaty did not last long as the Makkans eventually attaked converts, who refused to go back to Makkah but stationed themselves at the bank of a river, and killed a number of them. Now, Abu Sufyan, as a leader of the Quraysh was restless. He wanted to maintain his position as the Makkah leader, and at the same time knew he could not withstand the Muslim Army. So, he went to Abubakar Siddiq (RA), and then Umar bn AlKhataab (RA), begging them to intercede for him. When he did not get audience, he went to Aliyu bn Abi Talib (RA), and said, “O Ali, you are my closest relative here. I have come for a definite objective. I do not want to return to Makkah empty handed. Will you take my case to Muhammad?” Aliyu bn Abi Talib (RA) looked at him and said, “Well, Abu Sufyan, God’s messenger has already taken a decision and no one can speak to him about it again?” Abu Sufyan pointed to little Hassan, the son of Aliyu and said, “Well, will you tell this son of yours to declare peace between our peoples, and he will be the greatest Arab master for the rest of time?” “My child,” said Aliyu, “is too young to declare peace between people. Besides, no one can extend protection to anybody against God’s Messenger.” Abu Sufyan cried out, “O, Abu Hassan, matters have become too hard for me. Please, advice me.” “I swear,” answered Aliyu bn Abi Talib (RA), “I do not know of anything which will be of any benefit to you now. However, since you are the chief of your people, you can go and declare peace between them; just go home.” Abu Sufyan looked sorry, “But, will such step be of much use.” He said. Aliyu (RA) said, “I really do not think so; but I can see no any other way for you.”
