UMAR BN ALKHATTAB 44: The Weak and the Strong -A Complete Combination Umar bn AlKhattab (RA) was sitting on a pathway, when Uyaynah and another person came to him and showed him a document signed by Abubakar Siddiq (RA) that a piece of land had been given to them, and that Abubakar Siddiq had sent them to Umar to bear witness to it. They gave Umar the document. Umar took it and looked at it and then tore it to pieces. When they saw what Umar had done, they angrily went to Abubakar Siddiq to complain. On reaching Abubakar’s place, Uyaynah asked rudely, “Who is the Caliph, you or Umar?” people looked at the man. But Abubakar answered him, mildly, “He would have been, had he wished and accepted.” Then Umar entered furiously and asked Abubakar, even before he sat, “Tell me about this land you gave to these two people: is it your own personal property or the public property?” Abubakar Siddiq (RA) answered him, “It is public property.” “Who then gave you the right to assign the land to these two without the consent of other Muslim community?” Abubakar Siddiq pointed to those around him and said, “But I consulted these around me and they advised me to do so.” Then Umar said, “Have you also consulted all Muslims and ensured they are happy with it? They are all the owners of this land.” Abubakar Siddiq (RA) was silent for sometime. He then looked at Uyaynah and his friend and told them to leave. He stood up, came close to Umar, looked at him deep in his eyes, and said to him, “I told you that you are better able to undertake this leadership than me, but you forced me to accept the responsibility.” Umar (RA) smiled and said, “I praise God that I did give it to one who is better than me. The best man after God’s Messenger: Abubakar Siddiq.”
