UNAMA Featured Photos: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today hosted a news conference with the two candidates in the country’s Presidential election, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, and the US Secretary of State, John Kerry. At the event, the candidates spoke about their new agreement on the way forward with the audit of the results from the election’s 14 June run-off and the related political processes, including the formation of a government of national unity. Mr. Kerry also spoke on these topics as well as the role of the United Nations. “We now have in place the largest audit that the United Nations has ever conducted in any country in history, the deepest audit that they have ever conducted, and that’s why we have a big man here to do the job - Ambassador Kubiš is really dedicated to this, and we have in place the ability with both parties now agreeing to the rules of the road,” Mr. Kerry said, referring to the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, Ján Kubiš. After the news conference, the UN Mission tweeted that it welcomes the two candidates’ new agreement and looks forward to progress on their pledge to move ahead on forming a national unity government. Some 23,000 ballot boxes from the run-off – consisting of approximately eight million ballots – are undergoing a comprehensive audit by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission (IEC) in the full presence of international and domestic observers, candidates’ agents, the media and UN advisors.
