UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL by Miriam Mukasa Today, 7 July 2014, Kenyans have two choices: to unite and refuse to be used as political tools by people in high positions; or, to allow themselves to let divisions once again tear up a beautiful nation full of so much potential. A country which, despite its smaller size, is often cited on the same list of heavy weights such as Nigeria and South Africa, when it comes to the technology revolution in Africa i.e. An African Country to Watch. Kenya is at a crossroads; its people can unite and make this country great thus opening up opportunities for its youth or, succumb to divisive talks and take the country backwards at a time when there is so much at stake and far too much to lose. People in high positions (from all sides), need to act and speak responsibly. The youth of Kenya are the main hope for this country and, given that 65% of the population is aged 35 or below, this is a young country. It is time for the youth in Kenya to be given opportunities and hope for unity, instead of the focus being on divisions. The youth of Kenya SHOULD NOT and MUST NOT allow themselves to be divided. For it is the youth with no jobs, no credit and no hope, who have the most to lose. As we mark SabaSaba today, Kenya cannot afford to return back to the 2007/2008 post election violence era. The country has still not recovered economically following the violence that took place then and the shocking images displayed on TV screens around the world thus putting off tourists from visiting Kenya in large numbers. The latest string of attacks on the coast and the high death tolls indicate that there are tough times ahead for Kenya so the last thing this country needs is more violence, division, counter attacks and hate. Kenya desperately needs jobs, tourists, and foreign investment - violent attacks and counter attacks will do nothing to generate jobs for youth, tourism or investments into this beautiful country. And yes, no country can grow and/or prosper without foreign investment - even the super power, USA relies on foreign investment. As dawn breaks on SabaSaba Day, let us go about our daily business today in unity and as one nation knowing that no matter what tribe or religion, UNITED WE STAND; DIVIDED WE FALL! Stay safe AND stay United! From Miriam Mukasa
