UNiIbadan ASUU condemns FG’s clampdown on media The Academic Staff Union of Universities has described the Federal Government and its security agent’s clampdown on the nation’s media as insensitive, offensive and a symptom of incivility and savagery. While condemning the act in its totality, chairman of the union at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, urged the government to separate the media rights from political game ahead of 2015 general elections, adding that the industry was gradually being transformed into a theatre of war where politicians decided who the victims would be. “It should be noted that the mass media is a very important and indispensable organ of the society, charged with the responsibility to inform, educate and entertain the public,” said Ajiboye. Ajiboye also chastised the management of a radio station in Ibadan for suspending one of its programmes and its anchor. The UI branch of the union also faulted the government’s claim that the cardinal role of the press to inform and educate the public should not be at the expense of national interest. Ajiboye said such comment was hazy, bogus and vague.
