UOU; when preparedness meets competence. Political office is not assumed haphazardly or through persuasion otherwise the rest would be catastrophic and the very essence of governance relegated to the background. To demonstrate the above assertion, during the build-up to the 1979 general elections, Shehu Shagari who only nursed the ambition of representing his Sokoto Central Senatorial District in the upper house was persuaded by his party, the NPN to accept his nomination as the presidential candidate. Reluctantly,he accepted it after being pressurised by eminent elements of northern extraction.(D. Williams 1982 pp 188). The result was a missed opportunity to catapult the country into one of world economic powers given the oil boom as at that time and subsequent overthrow of his government which according to Ubani was celebrated by Nigerians. Looking at the political situation in Akwa Ibom state today, the Shagari scenerio is starring us in the face and is up to us to prevent it from manifesting, this we can achieve by voting en masse for Obong Umana Okon Umana (UOU) as the next governor. This is a man who is not only prepared but is highly competent as well. In the area of preparation, UOU having understudy the economic, social and political situations of the state vis-a-vis the peoples yearning and aspirations came out to declare his readiness to stir the affairs of the state amidst mounting opposition from his then boss who vehemently opposed his ambition and unceremoniously removed him from office,he remain unperturbed, focused and determined to lead the state to the promise land where poverty, unemployment, political gangstarism and ethnic suspicion would all be things of the past. UOUs competency is never in doubt,as the finance commissioner under the government of Obong Attah,he was never found wanting as he dexterously managed the finances of the state. This certainly earned him the post of the Secretary of the Akwa Ibom state government where he served as the longest SSG since the creation of the state. A feat that has never been achieved anywhere in Nigeria. It is only in the hand of someone like Obong Umana Okon Umana can we trust our destiny as a state for efficient service delivery.
