UPDATE- Aunt sentenced in child abuse death ADAMS COUNTY - Irene Walker was sentenced to 16 years in prison for child abuse resulting in the death of her 3-year-old niece Jersey Ruiz. During the sentencing, prosecutors revealed Walkers own daughter witnessed the assault and told therapists she saw Walker stomping on Jerseys stomach. Walker and Jerseys mom, Monique Maldonado, took Jersey to St. Anthonys Hospital but was determined to be dead. According to an arrest affidavit, the hospital staff advised police that Jersey was brought in by Walker and Ruizs mother. The affidavit says Jersey was reportedly lethargic all day and vomiting before being brought to the hospital. She went to preschool earlier in the day, but her mom was called to pick her up. According to the affidavit, when she was brought to hospital around 10 p.m. that night, Jersey was not breathing and did not have a pulse. The affidavit says the child was treated at St. Anthonys Hospital at least three other times. Walker told police Jersey fell down a lot and recalled a time when [Jersey] broke her leg and never cried or complained and how tough she was, the affidavit read. The Adams County Coroner told police Jerseys internal injuries were comparable to that of a major car accident. Doctors said she died from blunt trauma to the abdomen. Walker cried in court as the sentencing was read. She denied abusing Jersey and said her mistake was that she did not get help soon enough. When Monique picked up Jersey at Walkers home, she noticed something was terribly wrong. Jerseys last words were, Mom, I love you. Walker was a stay-at-home mom who cared for her own two children. Walker is the sister-in-law to Ruizs mother.
