UPDATE: EMIGRANT FIRE IN PARADISE VALLEY: FIRE NAME: Emigrant Fire DATE OF DETECTION: July 21, 2013 CAUSE: Lightning CURRENT SIZE: approximately 600 acres CONTAINMENT: 0% LOCATION: South of Emigrant Peak, between Gold Prize Creek and North Fork Sixmile Creek AGENCY: Gallatin National Forest PERSONNEL AND RESOURCES ON THE FIRE: 3 Type 1 crews, 1 Type 2 crew, 2 helicopters, 4 engines and overhead for a total of 122 personnel. SUNDAY’S ACTIVITY: Cloud cover and high relative humidity once again limited fire activity on the Emigrant Fire. A shower passed over the fire area around 2:30 p.m. with only minimal precipitation recorded, and no showers passed over the fire during the night. Two crews worked to improve the hand line that was constructed to the north of the fire, while the remaining crews and engines continued work on the hand line on the south end of the fire and to the west. MONDAY’S PLANNED ACTIVITY: With favorable weather conditions in the forecast for Monday, firefighters are planning to implement indirect burning operations on the north side of the fire at the head of Gold Prize Creek if the desired weather conditions are present. If those necessary burning conditions are not present, the burning operations will not occur on Monday but may occur later in the week when more favorable conditions return. Firefighters will be looking to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity to burn some of the fuel between the main fire and the constructed hand line in a manner that would allow the least amount of torching live trees. The burning operation is anticipated to take 1-4 days to fully implement once burning begins. Fire personnel will be igniting in a slow and patient manner beginning just below the rock ridge and working down slowly. The entire operation is expected to take 3-4 days. One hotshot crew and ten smokejumpers will be hand igniting the grass fuels to the north of the fire, while a helicopter will be aerially igniting the timber area between the main fire and the hand-ignited line. The large helicopter will also be available to support the firefighters on the ground with bucket drops if they are needed. SMOKE: People may see two distinct sources of smoke due to the two different types and places of ignition. FIRE WEATHER: The weather forecast is calling for a cooler day Monday, with a high temperature only reaching 72 degrees. The day should be mostly sunny with scattered showers and thunderstorms possibly impacting the fire area. The minimum relative humidity should be around 33%. CLOSURES & OTHER INFORMATION: Dailey Lake and most surrounding camping areas are open to recreationists through the weekend. Emigrant Fire Incident Command Post is located on a bench approximately ¼ mile north of the lake and that area is the only portion closed to the public at Dailey Lake Recreation area. Please be cautious of fire traffic on Dailey Lake Road. The Forest Service portion of Sixmile Creek Road from its junction with the Dailey Lake Road will be closed until further notice. The Sixmile Creek Trail (#61) and North Fork of Sixmile Creek Trail (#606) will be closed to their junction with Trail #601 north of Monitor Peak. Connector Trail #601 will remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire area to ensure the safety of the aerial fire operations.
