UPDATE: Five People Rescued From Water In Ocean City Posted: Sep 17, 2014 1:08 PM EDT Updated: Sep 17, 2014 5:05 PM EDT By Leanne Murray - email OCEAN CITY, Md. - Rip currents in Ocean City are being blamed for two back to back water rescues on Wednesday afternoon. Town of Ocean City says just before 12:35 PM Ocean City Beach Patrol and public safety partners responded to the area of 17th Street and the beach. Officials say three swimmers entered the water at 20th Street, when they were caught in a rip current, which drifted them down to 17th. Beach Patrol Surf Rescue Technicians then saw the swimmers in distress and pulled them from the water. Two of the three victims were taken to Atlantic General Hospital, where one, a 19-year-old male, was treated for non-life threatening injuries, while the second, a 52-year-old male from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, was pronounced deceased at 1:30 PM. Officials say as the first incident was stabilized, they received another call for a separate water rescue at 20th Street. The two swimmers, who had also apparently been caught in a rip current, were brought back to shore by lifeguards. They did not require medical attention. Due to rough surf and strong rip currents, swimming restrictions are currently in place, according to town officials. Ocean City is asking beachgoers to check in with the lifeguard on duty every time you go to the beach. Keep your feet in the sand until a lifeguard is in the stand. Town Officials say after the Labor Day holiday, lifeguards are strategically located along the 10 miles of Ocean City beaches with multiple mobile patrols on duty as well. They ask the swimmers enter the water in front of a lifeguards
