UPDATE: Powdery Substance Forces Closure of Royal Oak Police Station 10:30 a.m.: The Oakway Haz-Mat Response Team has determined the powdery substance contained inside a letter mailed to a Royal Oak detective is cornstarch. Chief Corrigan ODonohue said approximately 25 people, including two prisoners, were evacuated from the station this morning after the detective notified his supervisor of the incident. The matter is now under investigation by police. The police station has reopened to the public. Previous story: The Royal Oak Police Station was evacuated this morning at approximately 8:00 a.m. after a Royal Oak detective opened an envelope containing a white powdery substance. “Everyone was immediately evacuated as a precautionary measure,” said Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue. The Royal Oak Fire Department is on the scene with a hazardous material team to test the substance, O’Donohue said. The chief hopes to have more information within the next two hours. In the meantime, the police office is closed to the public. All 911 and police business calls are being transferred to Madison Heights Dispatch. Police services to Royal Oak citizens are not interrupted.
