UPDATE about todays cancellation with new information ... We know this morning’s late cancellation was inconvenient for many families and we wanted to share some additional information about the situation. The districts bus technicians were on site at 4 a.m. to begin starting the engines on all of the buses — at that time, only a few did not start. However, by 6 a.m., one-third of our bus engines had stopped running. District technicians determined that the fuel in the buses did not contain the required cold-weather additive. As a result, the extremely cold weather caused the fuel to turn to gel in the fuel tanks and engines. Our concern quickly became that buses would stop running with students on board, leaving buses and students stranded with no heat. Due to that concern, we made the late decision to cancel school. The district has been in contact with its fuel supplier regarding the absence of the required cold weather additive and the steps necessary to remedy the situation. Meanwhile, our technicians have been working throughout the day to treat the fuel in every bus and make other repairs as needed. They will work overnight if necessary, alongside several technicians who will be assisting from other districts, to get the buses running correctly. We greatly appreciate their hard work on this cold, long day. Our ability to have school tomorrow may depend on bus availability. If we do need to cancel, we will do our best to make that decision before 6 a.m. Thanks for your understanding.
