UPND Will Become Irrelevant with Next Loss, Says Kapita As United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema traverses the country in his most aggressive campaign, some party insiders are revealing worries that another presidential defeat – the fourth in just six years – might signal the end of the party. Hichilema’s Vice President of Administration Richard Kapita let his emotions run away with him during a recent party event, declaring that the party will be irrelevant if it fails to scoop the January, 20 presidential election. Addressing a rally at Choma’s Makalanguzu Market Kapita said that the 2015 presidential election was a last opportunity that UPND could not afford to lose after numerous unsuccessful attempts in the past. Hichilema has touched base with five provinces since launching his campaigns last a week ago at Kanyama’s Twashuka grounds. So far he has covered rallies in Lusaka, Copperbelt, Central, North Western, Western and Southern provinces. The party has been desperate to fight the widely held impression that UPND is a regional “tribalist” party by securing endorsements from figures such as former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga, former Prime Minister Malimba Masheke, former Secretary to the Cabinet Sketchley Sacika, and former MMD chairman Michael Mabenga. However UPND has failed to attract any prominent endorsement from Eastern, Luapula and Northern Provinces, which would be critical for electoral success. Zambia will hold a presidential election on January, 20 following the death of President Michael Sata. zambiareports/2014/12/01/upnd-will-become-irrelevant-next-loss-says-kapita/
