US Chamber - The Swing States of Obamacare Politico California, Florida, and Texas, which between them “are home to more than one-third of the nation’s 46 million uninsured people,” could determine whether the Affordable Care Act is a success. Politico says if supporters of the law “can’t convince large chunks of the uninsured in those three states to enroll” in insurance exchanges, the Administration “could have a very hard time reaching its enrollment goals.” Politico calls the three states “the ‘swing states’” of the ACA, getting “high-profile administration visits, money, resources and loads of national press attention.” ---- Obama Takes On High Cost of College Again The Wall Street Journal In his column for the Wall Street Journal, David Wessel writes that in addition to being a winning political issue for the President, the rising cost of higher education is also a threat to economic growth because it has the potential to discourage everyone but the wealthy to attend and finish college, which can inhibit economic growth. ----- Goodlatte Hints at Approach to Immigration Bill Roll Call House Judiciary Chairman Robert Goodlatte said in an interview this week that “he supported providing legal status” for the children of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US illegally by their parents, but that he would not “support a pathway to citizenship.” Goodlatte’s comments “could foreshadow the final version of the so-called Kids Act, a forthcoming bill” being drafted by Goodlatte and House Majority Leader Cantor. Also this week, Goodlatte wrote to DHS Secretary Napolitano about “reports of a surge of undocumented immigrants coming into the country claiming asylum under false pretenses.” In the letter, Goodlatte indicated that he shared some Republican “concerns about the White House’s trustworthiness, noting administration inconsistencies with how the law is followed and a pattern of using executive actions to ignore the law.”
