USA YOU THINK EVERY BODY SPEAK ENGLISH WRONG AS 60 MILLION PEOPLE SPEAK LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH IN THEIR HOMES IN THE COUNTRY 2013-08-08 15:33 Over 60 million people in America speak languages other than English in their homes. Among them, 1.14 million speak Korean. According to a survey by the U.S Census Bureau on Aug. 7, the population over five years of age who spoke non-English languages amounted to 60.06 million (20.8 percent) people. Households that spoke only English totaled 230 million residents. Those that spoke Spanish was 37.6 million residents. Non-English speakers in their household mostly spoke Chinese (2.88 million), Tagalog (1.59 million), Vietnamese (1.42 million), French (1.3 million), Korean (1.14 million), and German (1.08 million). The data does not reflect upon the residents’ ability to speak English. Even among the Spanish speaking households, 56.3 percent had no trouble with English, and only 9 percent could not speak English. Compared to studies conducted in 1980, non-English speaking households drastically increased by 158 percent, while total population rose by 38 percent. Languages spoken varied by state. In California, 44 percent of homes did not speak English, whereas in West Virginia, only 2 percent did not speak English. Camilla Ryan of the U.S. Census Bureau stated, “The role of non-English languages are on the rise.” “When the immigration population rises, they tend not to learn English,” said Professor Director Dowell Myers of the Population Dynamics Research Group at USC (University of Southern California). “However, this is only a temporary phenomenon.” Although immigrants may not speak English with their families, they learn English to work and attend schools, the Los Angeles Times predicted.
