Ugadi is the confluence of two words, Yug and Adi, where Yug means age and Adi refers to beginning. Hence, the festival of Ugadi, stating beginning of a new age, is the New Year day for people of Deccan region of India. The date of Ugadi is not fixed as it varies with the lunisolar Hindu calendar. The first day of the Chaitra month of Saka Samvata is seen as the beginning of the New Year and Ugadi is celebrated on this day with full fun and fervor, especially in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Sindh and Manipur.
