Uganda’s total population has grown 34.9 million people according to the Census 2014 Provisional results up from 24.2m in 2002 which is an increase of 10.7m people with an annual growth rate of 3%. is according to the results from the 2014 National Housing and Population Census released this afternoon by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics. The country’s population has grown from 16 million in 1991, to 33 million people in 2011 and now hit 34.9 though a state of the world population report by the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) said that Uganda’s population had hit that mark in early 2012. Central region highest with 9.6 million, Eastern with 9.11 million, West 8.1 million and Northern 7.2 growth rate. Wakiso is most populated with 2,000,700 people followed by Kampala with 1,516,210. The bureau now projects that by 2015 Uganda’s population will hit 35m if the current growth rate is consistent. Uganda warned Uganda will have the fourth largest percentage increase in population in Africa from 2015 to 2050, a new report by a United Nations agency said in August. Uganda is one of the African countries already with more than half of its population under 18 years of age. The number will rise to 15 by 2015, with Somalia (54 per cent), Burundi, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (all 51 per cent) among the eastern Africans on the list. The downside of the upshot in population figures for Uganda is that it will further increase the child dependency ratio in the country. Already, according to the report, Uganda has the second highest dependency ratio in Africa behind Niger. However, as Uganda’s economy grows, the report envisages that the fertility rate in Uganda will drop. Uganda’s current fertility rate stands at 5.7 children per woman. “With the exception of countries with already low levels of fertility rates, significant drops in fertility rates are projected for most African countries over the course of the century, and particularly in those countries with the highest rates at present,” says the report.
