Under current NC Statutes the coroner is the person that fills in for the sheriff if he is incapacitated or cannot perform his duties for any reason. Most of you remember that our current coroner had to be sworn in as sheriff for a few days until our newly elected sheriff could take office. In switching to the new medical examiner system this is one of the things that would need to be addressed. Shouldnt be difficult since 91 or 92 counties have made the switch. Not sure how the other counties handled it but it can be done.
