Unions need to start co-operative S-corporations, and use them to lobby The United States Congress to promote protectionist mercantile policies, so that construction and manufacturing jobs can gain back the North American Market. If United States citizens have to compete with foreign citizens on labor costs then the United States citizens will lose every time, because of the cost of living and doing business in North America. This is the only way I can think of to gain positive growth of the middle class in North America, because historically the middle class is composed of tradesmen, journeymen, fellowcraft, who are the skilled laborers. When skilled labor jobs are exported you structurally unemploy that entire segment of society. Here in New Orleans, you have hospitals being built with federal tax dollars, yet none local construction companies are getting the contracts while they are hiring foreign workers with H1B visas to do the job cheaply who then remit the money back to their home countries, which is why wire transfer services and check cashing businesses open near these sites.
