Unique hue is a term used in certain theories of color vision, which assert that human perception distinguishes between "unique" (psychologically primary) and composite (mixed) hues. A unique hue is defined as a color which an observer perceives as a pure color, without any admixture of the other colors. Usually, such theories four unique hues are distinguished, which roughly correspond to traditional "red", "yellow", "green" and "blue". But there are significant differences between individuals about which hues they perceive as "unique", and there are no experiments which show conclusively that most people distinguish only four unique hues. One of possible explanations of existence of 4 hues is the opponent process theory of color, which postulated two color opponencies, red–green and yellow–blue, along with grayscale black–white opponency.
