United legend Mark Hughes insists the fallen champions will be driven by the fear of failure – just as he was inspired by the critics in the 80s when Sir Alex Ferguson brought him back to Old Trafford from Barcelona. “There is a huge focus on United and you have to deal with that focus and attention. I used to use that as a motivation,” said Hughes. “From my point of view it was fear of failure. “I didn’t want to let anyone have the opportunity to criticise. “It used to drive me on and I would suggest it was what used to drive a lot of United players on who I played with. “United have always had that and they have players in their group now who have it. “But ours was a different era. “We were the right players at the right time. “We had to be a side that was able to deal with the physical side of it and earn the right to play. “The game is completely different now in terms of the way it is referee and the focus on it. “We used to get away with murder to be perfectly honest. “It was because there wasn’t so many cameras around. The way a team plays now has to be different and is different. “But don’t forget this team were champions last year and there haven’t been too many changers apart from the guy at the top.” -360
