Unlike Apple and Google, which own much of the ecosystems on which their respective marketplaces are built, Uber doesn’t own anything, other than its apps and dispatch service. That means Uber can only ever be a participant in a much larger and more diverse ecosystem — transportation — in which both drivers and riders can opt for the non-Uber option at any moment.
