Unlike some of my friends, Im actually a big backer of the Police as well as Fire/ EMS. The police are always second-guessed and really are screwed in public opinion whenever anything goes pear-shaped. Ive always been a believer in supporting the guys on the ground and giving the benefit of the doubt. HOWEVER. There is a frightening trend lately where the police are not practicing community policing, but are military shooters eliminating a perceived threat. The over-militarization is scary. A lot of my concerns are race-based: a black man in an open carry state is viewed as a target where I white guy is just another gun-lover. WTF? A have several friends who are cops, or were cops. Generally they are all good people, defenders of life, liberty, protecting people and property...members OF the community, not ABOVE it. Is that the standard anymore? Im thankful to live in a small town, with a small police organization that really does community policing. They are not just one of us...they ARE us. Im concerned for larger cities like Milwaukee, St. Louis as well as smaller cities that seem to be devolving that direction.
